Foam air filters: KN alternative?

I was searching for carb parts and came across these foam filters.

I know they are from the infamous MM but it is a very cost effective replacement to the KN systems which has been debated many times for its filtering effectiveness. I used to be into ATV's when I was younger and am familiar with the filtering abilities of properly oiled foam filters.

I looked up the True Foam company to see what type of tests they had done. there is some interesting info regarding flow rates both clean and dirt loaded. You don't see results with KN filters.

I also stumbled across some dyno comparisons between stock and these filters.

These may just be an alternative to the KN filters. Colors too.

Wayne can you get these?

Definately RSR red. Sorry I missed that thread.

I just e mailed them but they do not make them for MFI ..carbs only. Bummer.

jpnovak 01-23-2004 11:08 AM

The carb tops should fit MFI. You have to mod a watershield cover or use the flat top. P-thomas and others have done it.

Foam is the best. Piper Cross makes some of the best filters in the world.

hmmmmm...that's a thought.

on motorcycles i had both the Uni (foam) and the K&N. i actually think the K&N is better. it is easier to clean, and dry. stuff like that. i cant tell you which breathes better .

Gee, I wish they hadn't claimed a 12 HP improvement over the baseline test figure. Sounds like something K&N would claim. Still, I'm in the camp of foam over gauze.

Here's the earlier thread:

that's good enough for me..

so does anyone have the bottom line on foam for watershields.
Or I'm gonna hate to be stuck with K&N.

These look like they should work with Watershields; same top configuration and size. Wanna give Roy a call?

Has anyone ever used the ITG Megaflow filters?

Embs 01-23-2004 04:35 PM

Perhaps the carb guys won't have problems, but I can tell you from experience that lightly oiled filters of any kind should NOT be used on any engine with a Hot Film MAF system. IMO, K&N filthtration systems are a waste of money.
