71 911s Tach Wiring?????? HELP

I am heading down to The Caribbean this week for vacation and to help my Dad sort out his 71 2.2S. The car was completely restored and only the tach doesn't work. The tach was tested and checked out ok. The tach reading on a tach/ dwell guage shows irradic rpms ranging from 300 to 1000. All this while the engine is running nice and constant. A couple of questions to the board:

1. what are the correct wires/ colors for the tach hook-up and where do they attach to?

2. can there be a faulty hook-up between coil and distributor, cd box that causes a signal block or interference?

I would like to help my Dad sort this problem and get a chance to drive this puppy at full song! Mind you no speed traps on this Island! Cops don't really bother you. Just got to watch out for the occassional goat or donkey crossing the road.

Cheers,

Mike

hmm.. not sure what exactly the problem is but the purple/black wire runs straight from the dizzy back to the tach via the 14 pin connector.
