Decode this for me...
 

(I already checked the archives, no luck).

So I am looking at my original window sticker and am trying to decode a couple of things. First off, I have never been able to find a paint code sticker in the usual places on the car. I think it's pretty safe to say that it's Rosewood/Quartz Metallic (see avatar!) The inside is a two tone brown and tan combination.

Anyhow, on the window sticker it says Color Code: 99V999
under the options there is an option for "Color to Sample - $1,200" and an option for "Special Leather Interior - $1,000).

So what exactly does 99V999 and Color to Sample mean?

I think that means that the buyer submitted a sample of the color he wanted and the factory painted the car that color. So, you don't have a factory color that has a name. It's completely custom. Pretty neat I think, you'll never see another one like it!

It means that the car was originally a custom paint job from the factory. It one point, you could provide a color sample to the factory and they would paint the car that color. They would also do the same for interior colors.

This is what probably happened with your car. I don't know the year of your car, but it is possible that you got rosewood\quartz metallic before it was available. That, or it was a shade or two off of rosewood and paint has subsequently faded\mellowed with age.

If it is a pre-81, a special wishes car would have a VIN like:

911X9XXXXX

Uh oh, that's a bit distressing. It's nice to be different, but not so different you can't match when it come time for a respray!
I can't possible figure why the PO would do anything custom, the rest of the car was bone stock. However, it is possible. When I got it, he told me that his new 03/04? just came in. (I figured you could just buy one off the lot.!)

When it comes time to repray or touch up you can get it matched. Send a sample piece, headlight ring or something, to paint scratch and they will match the paint. I did and it worked great.
