Late dash pad in early car?

Anyone have experience putting a late dash pad on an early car? I am putting a dash pad with the single wide defrost vent (993?) in my '73 with two defrost vents and haven't yet decided how to deal with the defroster mismatch.

Thanks, Matt

I have done exactly that, but because of my local climate, I haven't worried much about the defroster mismatch.

Frankly, looking at the parts, I think it would comprise major surgery to have a real matchup.

Lets face it the defroster dont really work well in the first place, I put a late dash in my car, after putting it in it works as good as it did before, Kevin

Thanks for the input. As my car is gutted right now my initial plan was to do some major fabrication in the dash but I think a little tweaking of the old ducts and a little foam around them to help seal it off will be good enough. So... what the heck do I hook the center vent up to? Might be nice to have it function.

Would a 964 dash pad be a better match instead of the 993 dash pad?

AFAIK, the dash pads are pretty much the same from 964 through 993.

The 964 was 85% new parts over the '89 911, and the 993 was only 15% new parts over the 964. Pretty sure the late (big vent) dashes are interchangeable.

I've done this, no real difference, not worth the work to change it.

Steve, I believe they came with C2/C4 (1990-98, plus 1989 C4).

Steve, I may decide to sell my big defrost dash if I change my mind about installing it on my '73 if your interested. Complete with the center vent and the defrost vent.

Steve,

The long, single defroster vent dash began with the 1986 model year.

The 964, and 993 dashes are only slightly different (i.e. removeable end caps on the later cars) but primarily quite similar.

Good luck,
Tim
