Stuck AAV? Rap it with a hammer.

AAV?

Okay, what's an AAV? Where is it? How hard do I hit it?

Hammer? I would not suspect the Aux Air Valve. Because of the storage issue, use 2 cans of Techron Injector Cleaner on a full tank (80 liters). Run it for a while. When engine is nice and HOT, set the idle at 900 RPM by tweeking mix adjust screw and idle adjust screw. 500 RPM is really too low and it should not vary between 500 and 1000. Hunting usually occurs when the mix is off. Does your mix adjust screw in the fuel distributor still have the lead plug? If so, it needs to be removed so you can insert the 3mm Allen key for adjustments. Aside from the AAV, there is also the AAR. (Aux Air Regulator which has the electr. connection) I am not sure if the '82 has a deceleration valve. The CIS has a mess of stuff for emission control. Try the HOT idle adjust first. Cheers.

Hey you should have let us know you were starting it. Had a buddy come by with his newly acquired 90 C2.

We could all have gone for a romp.

Idle is probably due to it sitting. Drive it some more. It will like you better.

Regards,
Scott

OK

Thanks Gunter. Even though I don't understand any of it, it really sounds good. As a newbee, I really don't know where those adjustment screws are...can you try to walk me though it? If I know where they are, I would love to try some of this stuff myself. I did buy a large bottle of Techron today. Some people on the board say you have to chage the oil after using it...is that true?

PS: Stomachmonkey - are you a Metro member?

The _last_ thing you want to do is "start it up and let it run for five minutes." Jeez.

Get a Bentley manual. Search this board for mix adjust. Best is to have someone who knows show you. Mix and idle adjust is the last thing on a tune-up. Before that, the valve clearance is set, plugs and wires checked, timing set, in other words: All components are in working order and the necessary adustments done before the mix & idle is set. IMO oil change after using Techron is not critical since you have about 14 liters of oil (13 quarts) in the system. You can do it if you want to. Some people are very fussy about this and change oil too often. A small 4-cylinder engine has about 4 liters of oil and works hard. A Porsche SC has three times that amount, so, IMO changing oil every 3-4000 miles is plenty. Idling for too long is no good for any engine, when cold start-up, wait about 2 minutes and drive with low RPM until warm. Always try to get the engine hot, 5 minutes will not do it. Get the Bentley and a pal who knows 911's to help you with some basics.
