Cylinder studs - Dilivar or gray steel?
What's a good reliable choice for cylinder studs for rebuilding a 3.2? (I don't want the expense of Raceware and I don't plan on tubocharging)
Divilar or standard gray steel? |

Steel
Edit - I guess I should elaborate - dilivar has better thermal expansion properties, but is prone to corrosion. This may or may not be a concern, depending on how long you keep the car. When I was rebuilding my 930 engine, I replaced the dilivar with OEM steel. No problems. Your Carrera, I believe, has 12 steel and 12 dilivar. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. It would be OK to replace just the 12 dilivar.

Wayne and John Walker both recommended I go with steel uppers and lowers on my 3.2 so that is what I did.

993 Studs... Steel ones. Cheap and reliable.

I followed John Walkers advice on my 3.0 too. Steels on the bottom. Same part number as the ones used on the intake side.

OK, standard steel looks like the ticket. Wait a minute, I remember VW's needed something called case-saver inserts to handle the additional pulling forces on the studs. Since the steel studs will not lengthen like the OEM Dilivars when hot would case savers be a good idea and are they available?

3.2's DO come with 12 steel and 12 Dilivar..
Save some $ and replace only the 12 Dilivar with steel...factory / ARP / or Raceware.... --Wil Ferch

No offense intended, but a set of Raceware studs is relatively inexpensive insurance when compared to the hassle of having to remove a broken one.
When building racing or street engines (including V-8's in the past), I have always used either ARP of Raceware and have never had a broken fastener. Lindy Last edited by Lindy; 01-30-2004 at 11:17 AM.. |

I've never heard of a broken steel stud on a street driven 3.2!

Casesavers/Timeserts are commonly used on the magnesium cases, but not so much on the aluminum cases (like yours).
I just cleaned up the threads with a tap and then installed the steel studs on my 930 engine (with red Loctite).

About cleaning the threads: Are you folks using a bottom tap? If so, how are you removing any swarf at the bottom of the threaded section?
