964 6-speed conversion

Hey everyone,

I'm finally getting ready to install the 6-speed G50/20 in my 964, and wanted to check on one thing. I know the conversion is supposed to be very straightforward and no big deal. The biggest difference is that you need a 993 shift rod which is like 2 inches shorter than the 964. The one thing that I have not heard about it whether or not you can still use the same clutch or if a different clutch is necessary. If anyone has done this conversion or knows if the same clutch can be used with the 964 and 993 G50s I'd appreciate the input.

Thanks,
Andrew

It is the same clutch , change the Gearboxbracket to the Body too , it is a little different . You know that the G50/20 is very Loooong geared and even the 993 varios have not enough power for those ,so dont be surprised .

Harald,

Thanks, at least the expensive stuff is the same. I didn't know about the gearbox bracket though. I'm not really worried about the long gears. I've heard from a few people that did the conversion that it's basically like gaining 50hp for a 964 since both have 3.444 final drive ratios, so the gears are going to be a lot closer than the ones that I already have. The G50/21 is closer geared, but I've heard a lot of people including RUF say that they prefer not to use them because of a fragile third gear and a few other issues, so I think the G50/20 will be the best all around box.

I've been thinking about doing this myself. Out of curiosity, how much is this project costing you?

well, I can't really say because I work in a porsche shop, so I don't have to pay for an awful lot of things required for the actual swapping. So my biggest costs are the transmission itself and an aftermarket limited slip. so it's probably about... $4,500 for those.
