Drove the new baby home in the snow (6*F)

I picked up my 87 coupe yesterday in the snow. I would have liked to have waited until the weather was better, but the seller needed the car moved before the movers come this week. When we left home it was 3 degrees, but the roads were dry. Now its home, and the fun begins!!

I've got quite a project list together already. As soon as I can run the gas out of the tank, I'll be dropping the engine to do the G50 update. While its out, I'm going to do the clutch, pilot bearing, fuel lines, sound pad, oil press switch, flywheel seal, valve adjustment, O2 sensor, dizzy cap, rotor, wires, plugs, belts, trans oil, engine oil, filters, brake lines, and caliper rebuild. Yikes, the parts list is already up to + $2600.

Last night I changed the front hood shocks. I'll do the rears "while its out."

Awesome. Silver is one of the absolute best colors for 911's especially the bellows bumpers cars. Looks like it is in really good shape.

Get the car lowered, aligned, and corner balanced. Unless you know that the shocks/struts have been changed you might want to replace those too. I drove my '88 for two years, the car passed the old "bounce test" (doesn't work on our cars), but when I finally decided to change them I discovered the old shocks/struts were completely shot. Externally you couldn't tell, no leaking or anything.

I'm going to try and put off the shocks until spring/summer. I think I'll do turbo tie rods, shocks, tires, and maybe a strut brace? I hadn't thought about lowering it. We have a nasty curb at the end of the driveway, so I would have to make sure it wouldn't scrape. I plan to do it all together, then get the alignment/balance done once.

Time to get the warm clothes on, and knock out a couple of Wayne's projects.....

Just an aside, you don't need to run all the gas out of the tank to drop the engine. If you aren't going to run the engine for more than two months, just put some fuel stabilizer in the gas tank.

Kurt, I'm planning on replacing the flexible fuel lines. I figure the tank needs to be drained if I do them. Can anyone confirm this?

Joe, The throw-out bearing guide tube and fork were updated by the factory in 89. I learned alot about it from seaching this forum for "G50 update."

I fixed several little problems today (light bulbs, interior lights that didn't go out with the door closed, etc.) and had to give her a road test. Yep, the lights still work. (any excuse for a road test....)

While the G50 is a nice 'box', why update? Every G50 I've driven is really long between gears. A solid 915 with an updated short shifter should provide better performance. Of course I've only driven the 964 G50 so I don't know if your ring and pinion is different in the one you're going to install.

Thanks again guys. I'm also partial to silver. I had a silver 996 a couple of years ago, it just seems like the right color. (not that I wouldn't take another color.... especially the bright greens and oranges of the 60's & 70's cars... I love those too....)

Tristan, I'm just updating the release bearing to the newer design. The old design has been discontinued. The bearing is making noise, so I'm living on borrowed time until I get it changed. Of course, there are lots of things to do "while its out."

On the curb idea, we are planning to move this summer. The garage and driveway will be on my checklist....

Hmm...a gearbox cannot provide "perfomance", just adequate gearing. A "solid" 915 will provide good-to-average shifting...for 10000 miles (give or take, depending on driving style), after that shift feel will gradually decline into "crap"-teritory until it needs (expensive) rebuild, much sooner than equally treated G50 ever will.

915 is a bad transmission compared to G50. It's synchromesh is of inferior design and it cannot cope much torque in case you go turbocharging (Juan Ruiz still uses his G50!!?!). Given the financial means, I don't see any logical reason to keep 915 in the car other than purely nostalgical factor. You cannot fight the progress.
