Bought some bulk firewall insulation.....edging needed?

I bought some bulk material from Appbiz at Dunk's for the 914/6...the edges are a bit fuzzy. They don't have a precut model for the poorman's Porsche....

What if anything do you edge it with?

911pcars 02-02-2004 09:08 AM

Mylar tape, about 2" wide. Fold over the exposed edge.

You don't have to edge it if you don't want to. A new pair of high quality sissors will make a good cut. Appbiz sells a version (maybe their old one) with out edging.

I don't know what would be best for it, it would need to withstand heat pretty well. Vinyl might work.

EDIT: Sherwood beat me to it, good idea w/ the mylar.

I was mostly worried about the mouse fuzz getting sucked into the air cleaners...

Mike on our upgraded pad we sew on some poly binding using our carpet binding machines.
I would like to do a version for 914's and early 911s, perhaps if you make me a really, really really good pattern so I can have a die made, you will get the first one gratis
Bob

Joe Bob 02-02-2004 09:58 AM

Thanks for the offer Bob....btw, nice meeting you.

To do it properly, I would need to do a pattern on a 914 that has an empty engine bay.....I will find somebody who has one and get it to ya....what kind of turn around?

Blondie has made resrve on ebay and it looks like she is gonna get a new home.....

appbiz 02-02-2004 01:25 PM

Mike it would take me about two weeks before I had die finished and was punching out products

Bob,

Send me some contact imfo at 356@cox.net I have found an original firewall pad that you can do a pattern off of...

914 firewall pad

Thanks to MikeZ we will have 914 lighweight engine sound/heat pads available next week. We put a rush on this project and the dies will be ready late this evening. I plan to punch out a bunch this weekend. They will be available with or without perimeter binding. Like our 911/930 pad they are precision die cut from a felt product with reinforced foil on both sides. Those of you that would like to preorder please contace Eugene a PP. Pricing will likely be just a little higher than our 911 units (these things are huge!)
Again thank you MikeZ for providing us with an OEM pad that was in really good shape for our die measurements.

What an inspiring thread. In the span of only 12 days, a simple suggestion goes from idea to quality product on the street. Amazing. Kudos to Appbiz, this kind of thing creates a loyal following.

Nothing against Appbiz, but JC Whitney has some sound absorption material; 3/4--1" foam with mylar coating, 1-side is self-adhesive too. One length covers a typical 911 engine bulkhead. I used it on my car a number of years ago and it has held up fine.
