Help opening monotronic for chip change
 
I took off the lid on the monotronic on my 84 targa to change the chip. I took a small screwdriver to the black plastic screws that hold the boards together but there was no movement in the screws (located over the wire ribbon). I read the instructions but what do I do if the pieces holding the board together won't turn?

on my 87 carrera the two boards are held bye snap posts!
they snap together and pop apart. Warning are you prepared to solder in a new chip. On older Carreras they soldered in the chip and you have to remove it and replace it with a solder in socket
and possibly a zero force socket. If you are not very experienced in Boards do not do it yourself or you will be buying a new DME.

Please take it to someone that really knows what they are doing
and don,t solder in the new one even though thats how Porsche did it, What if Steve Wong makes further advances !!!!

I did my chip in 45 min....out, open, change, close, in, on my '85. You should have another pair of hands...to hold the bottom half of the board and pull on the top half as you insert the screwdriver into the posts and twist. You do have to exert substantial force. My chip was pull out (carefully) and pop in (carefully).

The place to insert the screwdriver is in between the boards. Then while lightly twisting the snaps you need to pull the boards apart. Like kepperly said, the 84s may well be soldered. I suggest you call Steve Wong, for pointers. He's the DME 'samurai'.

My '84 wasn't soldered either, Wong chip went in smoothly.
Take your time and don't force it, make sure you get all the pins in when re-inserting the new chip or she'll run like crap" ask me how I know" :eek:

Note that ischmitz's (excellent) directions are for a 3.6 DME. The 3.2 procedure is different.

Thanks for info. I didn't realize that I had to put the screwdriver between the boards--very helpful
This forum has helped me many times to keep my 84 getting better.

I wouldn't put ANY screwdriver directly between the boards..only the posts, and the small "tabs" on the boards.

Opps-I was thinking of the putting the screwdriver into the posts between the boards to free the boards- not directly on the boards.

I put the screwdriver into the slot in the post to pry the fingers apart while simultaneously applying finger pressure to seperate the boards.
