is this the volt reg and noise suppresor?
ok, i dont have the skills to add arrows to my pics. so i went old school with the flashlight. is the lit up (with flashlight) component the noise suppresor? and then the black box above it will be the voltage regulator, right? what happens if i bypass the noise suppresor? just wondering. i am in the process of cleaning contacts in order to find out what the heck is making the alt light come on at idle.

Yep.
Just unplug the connectors on suppressor and regulator, remove suppressor [trash or shelf, your choice] ... and plug wiring harness connector back onto bottom of regulator. That may be the fix ...

Actually, that particular suppressor was used beginning with 1974 models, and was the result of more restrictive VDE [German equivalent of our US FCC] regulations regarding EMI/RFI emissions outside the vehicle, but most people assume it was for a quieter radio ... though that was strictly a side benefit.
Problem is ... that suppressor has proven a bit unreliable after 25+ years , and quite a few people have reported nasty/tricky alternator & regulator problems disappearing after removal of the suppressor!
