Too cool!
Thanks for letting me in. I gotta gowmload a few cheats so i have the required cars. And I don't know why my car was so slow tonight. I'm not Schumcher, but i started - ran off while everyone else was stationary- then suddenly (server update) I'm 30 seconds behind and being left like I am standing still. I gotta figure that out. Hope you are racing again soon. I'll get my IP addy and try to host too if needed.

masraum 02-04-2004 08:54 PM

Well, Pari and Leland and I have had a blast. We've been racing for a couple of hours. I will continue to look around and see if I can determine what's wrong and why we can't get more than a few people on any one server.

Scott from the 914 board got on for a bit tonight. He had some technical difficulties, but we appreciated him coming.

Par911 02-04-2004 08:55 PM

Well it was the Red Group again, me Leland, and Steve played on Steves IP. We had a nice GT1 tournament, that sometimes resembled a demolition derby. There has to be some way that we can get some more people in Steve's IP, Derek and KJB try to log on with us tomorrow.

masraum 02-04-2004 08:59 PM

I have a spare PC maybe I can set it up just for this, maybe a dedicated pc will help. I may not have it ready for tomorrow, but I might.

masraum 02-04-2004 09:01 PM

OK, what we seem to have learned from Derek is that the guys with the 169.254.x.x addresses need to go to www.whatismyip.com, find out how they look on the internet and then publish that address.

We can get this licked I know we can.

Par911 02-04-2004 09:04 PM

Steve, the comma at the end of the link screwed it up. Try this:
www.whatismyip.com

masraum 02-04-2004 09:25 PM

Oops, sorry

Here's some general NFS info

To use the username cheat codes, goto the main menu and click "Create Player" and type in the cheat for the name. Click "Done" (you'll hear a little confirmation sound). Then choose your regular profile and play the game!

Smash Up - Destruction Derby style racing
Dakar - Drive with Rally physics

yraGyraG - Enables all cars to have 993 physics
fetherw8 - Heavier cars

Miscellaneous Cheats
All Cars & Tracks
Enter multi-player mode and select the "Peer To Peer" option, but choose to race alone. You will be able to select any car on any track.
Infinite Money

masraum 02-04-2004 09:33 PM

This may also help things a bit

found on the net

As mentioned, peer to peer IP races can be found using a utility called
NCOPS. It can be downloaded at
http://ncops.racerplanet.com/
Its purpose is to display IP's of people hosting NFS 4 & 5 races. (I just
checked, two races currently being hosted)

You can also look at
http://www.racerplanet.com/forum/
for information on the porsche racing online league and more fans of the
game.

masraum 02-04-2004 09:40 PM

The little utility seems to work for listing games. It won't work for you guys that show one ip address in the game, but another on the internet, because it picks your natural IP

If anyone is at all curious about what is going on with the people who seem to have 2 different ip addresses this link will tell you.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm

If you have a router at your house it is almost certainly doing NAT, and apparently some isps are doing it too.

Par911 02-04-2004 09:44 PM

Steve that is a great link, i downloaded V.10 and hit launch and it worked. I didn't see anyone else hosting though.

masraum 02-04-2004 09:58 PM

Yep, I listed for a sec to see how it worked, but other than that research I'm done for the night, wow, maryland, it's even later where you are. Night all, we'll try again tomorrow.

Glasgow 911SC 02-05-2004 04:49 AM

So AOL must be NATing me? I guess that means I can only get a game going if we can find a server that hosts the game like the battlefield 1942 ones I play on.

Only once did it seem like something was happening when it said that the person I was trying to join was using a different version.

osidak 02-05-2004 05:01 AM

The different version guy was me. Still trying to figure out if my update took.

Loads of fun last night and plan on being back tonight. To get it to work I had to bypass my router and even then I could not attach to other people. I kept getting a Connection lost message.

I hosted and I was able to pick up three people and we had a pretty good connection i think.

So to that end what ports do I need to open to leave my router in place (I opened 9400) and also what am I doing wrong that prevents me from attaching to others. I don't mind hosting but I felt bad when I had to dump everyone to call it a night.

HELP!!!!!!

Glasgow 911SC 02-05-2004 05:06 AM

I know sooo little about this. I don't even know if I have a router? Don't think I do, just an AOL USB broadband modem.

osidak 02-05-2004 05:06 AM

second question - what kind of ping times are people seeing. I wonder if some of the problems are due to high ping times. I was seeing a max of 200 and mostly in the low 100's for the people that connected to me.

masraum 02-05-2004 06:44 AM

OK, I saw in my firewall logs packets on UDP and TCP 9400, but according to a bunch of stuff that I found on the internet last night it is 9440 and/or 9442 UDP. Apparently the game will do UDP or TCP, but because it is connectionless prefers UDP. Looking at my current logs I'd say 9442 is the number to go by and I have a pretty even distribution of TCP & UDP.

So 9442 TCP and UDP seem to be the key. If you've got the capability might as well do 9400 too. I wonder if that is part of the difference between some people connecting and some not, some versions use a different port. Hmmm

Chris/Glasgow, if you have a modem then you probably don't have a router, but some modems these days perform some router like functions, so I can't say for sure.

What SHOULD be happening is that if you are going through NAT you probably shouldn't be able to host a game, but you should be able to join one.

I also found several things on the internet in several different places that said that if you delete/rename the gimmee.dll that you may not be able to take part in online games, but it seems to be a "some work, some don't" type of thing. I think it seems to be very very touchy on delay or something.

Leland and I seem to get pings of 110-160 between us, but Pari because he's on dialup averages 260-360 with occasional numbers all over the map.

I did a test last night, and apparently SBC has bumped my upload speed up a bit to about 200K from what used to be 128K, so that should help hosted games.

Hopefully we'll keep getting better at this.

DR Ryan, man this really sucks, hopefully we'll get something working for you, sorry man!

PS I THINK that when you load the game it might display the version at the top or bottom of one of the opening screens, but I can't check right now.

See you tonight.

kjb 02-05-2004 07:38 AM

Steve,

My router logs only showed traffic at port 9442 while I was connected to Osidak's game. I was never able to connect to your game.

/ J

masraum 02-05-2004 07:48 AM

I just disabled my firewall when I was hosting or trying to connect, but it continues to log packets.

I think 9442 should do the trick.

my patch obviously didn't take since the executable is 244 kB. Can someone e-mail me the patch at kjb@[remove this]kth.se?

This might explain why we all couldn't connect last night. The people on Osidak's server are probably all running pre-3.5 software (maybe without knowing it, like me).

this game that you are all going on about: is a good simulation of driving a car? how does it compare with granturismo for the playstation (which is surely THE best driving sim)
