That whole setup is highly dependent on a maze of vacuum lines, tanks and servos. So, you need vacuum to do most anything. Check lines for leaks. And, of course, you have to run the car to shift it. You might get it out of gear by rocking it back and forth, but you're up on stands.

Hey Len,
got your PM but i thought i'd reply here to try and bump post up and generate a few other looks. If it was fine while motor running and now inoperable when motor not on (i know you cant start it now as sportos wont start unless in park or neutral) that would lead one to believe that it is low vacuum pressure...when motor not on, the air in the big tank attached to fire wall is your reserve for just such movements. BUT, the problem is that the gear should be able to move freely when the car is not on. I believe that the clutch arm may be stuck in the engaged position thus not letting your clutch arm pull back into the diaphram (donut thing on top of tranny just inside driver rear tire). get under there and have someone move gearshift while you keep your hand on that little lever or arm. does it move? if not check microswitch contacts under the gearshift lever boot and then come back and tell us what happened.

EDIT: have ignition key turned on while checking for movement.

Had the same problem ( *many* years ago)...with an Automatic Stick Shift ( A.S.S) Bug.

The smallish ( 32 gauge or so !) wire on the microswitch broke by simply ( as you should) touching the gear shift knob as I went from reverse to a forward gear !!

...allright, now we're getting somewhere. thanks for idea will!

the little arm on the donut moves via suction from a tank that is operated by a valve that is tripped by a solenoid directly wired to a switch at the base of the gearshift lever. the microswitch is manipulated by movement from your hand which is attached to your arm (hopefully). stay with me here... the switch has TINY little contacts on it and the forward and back movement of the stick makes them connect to trip the solenoid/valve/suction/donut/arm and move the clutch. If you think about it this is a helluva lot of stuff to be dependent upon a small switch prone to bending out of place and getting dirty. try this:

get in, peel back boot that sits on top of microswitch, take cap off of microswitch cover, turn key and move stick front and back (i wear a miners light shining down in there to see better) and watch to see if contact is being made by the lobes of the switch. if so can you hear the valve opening and closing?

As Joe stated you should be able to put it in to any gear when the car is not running. Have you checked the shift coupler under the plate in the rear floor of the interior?
