Plug Gap With MSD
I'm using an MSD 6A in my 67S. The instructions say to increase the gap according to the C/R. But, really don't nail it down. Anyone with any comments on the best gap to use with a stock motor?
|
Hey there Bob,
I too live in Livermore, and I just happen to be installing an MSD in my 1971 RS clone (2.2S motor). My research on this board tells me that a good place to start is .040 according to Steve at Rennsport.
I also have a 64 356C, seems our tastes run along similar lines ;) Keep me posted on how it works out! |
Doug,
Thanks for the help. I'll go with .040 and see how it works. We'll have to hook up some day. |
I run mine at .040 also.

Me too. Twin ignition, 10.5:1.

Did anyone here have to use the 8910 tach adapter?
Thanks for your replys, |
Good question.
Unfortunately Wayne's book says that it pretty much random. He puts it down to possible differences in the build tolerances of the tachs themselves.
So I don't think there is a simple answer to this one. Some do some don't. |

I installed it anyway.. but the routine is to see IF you need it or not before spending the bucks.. |
Bought it. Installed it. Still didn't work. I just got a tach from a 73...
|
I posted how I did it in my '69E on this thread.

I am told the gap is more of a function of the coil you are using. Did you install a new coil as well? If you still use the stock coil, do you not still use the stock recommended gap? Just asking.
|
Coil output varies by input voltage. An MSD I believe puts out around 460v....

On my 69T I installed an MSD 6AL without the tach adapter and my tach went crazy--had no relation to the RPMs, but was pretty interesting to watch--never figured out what it was registering. I bought the tach adapter and it fixed it. I don't think any damage is done by running it without the adapter and it's an easy retrofit, so I'd advise buying the MSD only and then buying the tach adaptor if needed.

Hi:
A couple things,.... If you use an MSD ignition, you MUST use an MSD coil to get the proper output and power. We did some dyno tests a few years ago with MSD's and they all lost power unless the MSD coils were used. We tested both Bosch CD & Blue coils, and two MSD coils. Its an impedance matching issue. You'll need to gap those plugs at .040 to .045 to take full advantage of what the MSD can do for you,...:) Your plug wires and connectors must be in perfect condition to prevent burning and misfires. We use, recommend and sell the Magnecor 8.5mm ones which use their own proprietary resistor-less connectors. I hope this helps, |
Steve,
I will be using the MSD coil. I did get Magnecor wires, but will be using 7mm rather than the 8.5. Problem? Thanks, |
The MSD should have come with a list of compatable coils...

I have a MSD installed in my '67S as well. Tach is not working though. :( But definitely more power and I'm using the MSD E-type coil. Give me a buzz if you can figure out the tach. Sprint. |
