How to create daytime running lights?

I have an 84 carrera and I would like to have the headlights on whenever the car is running. What do I need to do? i.e. what wires to hook and where.
Thanks in advance.

Isn't there some sort of factory item for this for cars driven in Paris?

You could always pull the switch out after starting the car......

I think my H4's have the little bulbs that I could connect serving as daylight lights.

.....One of my projects pending....

In my case those little bulbs are connected to the parking lights, so I just have to pull the switch to the first stop to create the daytime running light effect..
It looks pretty darn cool but true running lights are the high beams on low power, you can buy the running light kits in any car store.

Oracle,

Your hookup was my plan. I also understand about the 'real' running lights, but being old-fashioned, I really do not want to overuse my alternator. It has always been my opinion that those lights were marketed by bulb companies, battery companies, and alternator companies.

Don't get me wrong. I turn my lights on during the day when I hit the canyons. It is mostly canyon driving in my area.

p.s.,

I have Sony's super high-end amp and a self-powered sub running ALL the time. I would rather overwork my alternator on MUZAK than being so bright in the eyes of the Highway Patrols.

And here I tore the dash apart on my Chevy truck to disable the stupid things!

I've been thinking of rewiring my H4s and adding the small bulb also as a daytime running. There must be a way to add a relay to one of the switched power sources that will bypass the parking light switch and force it on when the key is on. I just haven't figured it out yet.

I used my Carrera clear fog lights for driving lights, by-passed the headlight switch so they could be on without the head/park lights being on.

Thanks for the help. I may just run it to my driving lights.

You need day time running lights in Vegas?

I don't think the H4 auxilary bulbs would work as "daylight running lights."
My H4's were wired to have the little bulbs lit when the parking lights are on. They aren't even as bright as parking lights. I called it the "warm European glow" look.

What kind of bulbs fit the H4 city light socket? Can you get a larger bulb?

CrossT 02-11-2004 10:58 AM

I've been wondering about that little socket in my H-4s as well as the extra wire in the harness. So, if you connect the wire and put [what kind of bulb?] in the socket, the lights come on when?

Just with parking lights or all the time?
