VCI is the only one that has used the 944t rotors on the front of a 911, he uses the 299x28mm rotors from an '86 944t. Chris Streit has that set up and is happy w/ it, but his is a pretty light car.

Hvad vil du gøre til syn? Bytte bremser!?? :p

Bill, do you mean that a '86 944t fr. rotor will fit without problems?
Maybe that will be the way to do, it's still a big improvement over the 282*20 |

Personally I don't like that sort of install. The 2 piece rotors are a much better idea from a weight and flexibility perspective. The hats to bolt to stock 911 hubs are easily fabricated. There are many possible rotors supplied by AP, Alcon and Brembo that only need the hats and calipers. I listed some of the possible rotors here To use 15" wheels the rotors need to be kept under 310mm. The sweet spot is the 304x32 and 309x28 that the Porsche engineers selected for the 930. They offer the best combination of thermal capacity, weight, and fit in smaller wheels. The next sweet spot is the 322x32 and 322x28 993tt rotors but you need some 17" wheel to employ tyhem. |
I'm also putting 996 monoblocks on my '75, picked up a new set for dirt cheap. Anyone knows where I can get some adapters for a reasonable price? Otherwise I will machine some myself.
Thanks! |
Bill,
I saw your post on possible rotors. Where does one get those? I would be interested in the floating setup as mine is a DE/autox only car but I don't want to shell out huge $ for rotors every year. The ~$100ea factory one piece rotors are cheap and easy to source. The ~$300 two pc early 930 ones are still "reasonable", but I hear the replacement rotors for the VCI/coleman setups are quite a bit more than that. (Steve Timmons indicated ~$500 on his website) Axeman, I haven't been able to find any adapters. Please let us know if you dig something up (I have email VCI and they said they would get to it eventually, but were working on a setup using the 996 GT2 or 3 brakes first). SMD |
check out marc's site.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/MotorCity/marcesq1/ He used Carrera drilled rotors. Last year i changed mine front 282*20 to 282*24 and could easily feel the diff. |
Folks, Please be very careful! Marc is not using 996 calipers. He used Boxster front calipers which are quite different.
I have made my feelings plain on this matter. The Boxster caliper w/ the Carrera rotor is not much of an upgrade. You can get almost the same results as Carrera rotors and Carrera rotors for a lot less $$ Something like this will be as good. front http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1076971177.jpg Rear http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1076971197.jpg |
996 vs boxster calipers
Bill, you are right about Marc has used boxster calipers, my mistake, sorry.
Boxster uses 298*24 front 292*20 rear rotor, which's almost same size as Carrera/SC. Boxster S uses 318*28 front 299*24 rear rotor, same as 996. My guess, and it's a guess is that boxster S and 996 calipers are the same but the non S boxster has a smaller/ norrower caliper for the smaller rotor. Which of cause means that they cannot handle those bigger rotors I/we would like to upgrade my/our cars to. The 996 rear caliper will not be able to grasp over the 930 (309*28)rotors since it's for a 299*24 mm rotor. And the front will not be able to grasp over the 304*32 930 rotor since it's for 318*28. To sum up things I think the best is to use drilled Carrera rear rotor 290*24. The front is a little uncertain but possibly a 944 Turbo 298*28. I'll be back when I've done some more reseach. |
What would be really nice is to develop a floating hat type rotor that will allow you to use the Boxster calipers, but offer you a thicker rotor (maybe 26mm or 28mm) or so
|
MJ, if you come up with a solution that will fit under 16's without flares let me know!

Yes, the Boxster S and 996 use the same calipers.
Often a caliper made for a 24mm rotor, for instance a 964 or 993 rear caliper, can be made to fit a larger, 28mm rotor, w/ some judicious use of hand tools. The opposite(IMO;) )case of using a caliper designed for a 28mm rotor on a 24mm rotor is far more dangerous as there is a real risk of hyperextending the pistons, this can cause torn seals, cocked and jamed pistons and can be a real problem. There currently are 4 sets of generally available calipers and rotors that will fit 16s 1)Full 930 2)Full 964 on 944t rotors like Chris Streit uses 3)Full 964 on 930 rotors like the set I just sold 4)Full 993 on 930 rotors, or even better 993/965 on 930 rotors. This last is becoming very popular w/ the track junkies. Quote:
I have a few 993/965 on 930 rotors kits together for a local friends but don't want to make a carreer of it. There are currently quite a few backyard brake projects going on here at Pelican right now |
boxster calipers
kellzey, I don't think you got it.
The boxster calipers are just not that wide. The Boxster SSSSS and 996 are just a little better. If you want real stopping power over and over again (race,DE) you need the bigger rotors. Floating rotors are just what I don't want, they are expensive and special order (remember I'm from Europe). What I want is off the shelf rotors preferably at lower price and some that are better than those that I already have. |
Bill, you are talking about 964 and 993 rotors but I thought you said they would not fit an '69-89 car?????
Or have I misunderstood something? |
Bill, disregard the above.
I misread you are talking about 964/993 calipers with 930/944t rotors, sorry!!! |
