Don't even think of going to a local dealer here - especially HBL. They wouldn't know it was a Porsche if you showed them them the title. Porsche of Arlington is ok, depending on what type of car it is. Where is this prospect located? There are a LOT of good Porsche shops in this area and most of the locals know them very well.

Northern Virginia is about the size of Rhode Island, only more traffic. Knowing where exactly it is would make it easier to recommend a shop. If it's in Arlington or McLean, for example, there might be shops in Maryland that are closer than some in VA.

I am working thru a broker, so at this time I only know it is in NOVA. It may be a little premature but I wanted some ideas if we agreed on the price. BTW it is a 94 3.6 turbo. I'll keep everyone posted. And thanks Richard for the heads up on HBL.

Richard is right, the dealers won't even recognize a Porsche older than a 996.

PM me if you want my opinion on where else not to go.

Here's one place you can try:
Autosport Systems Group (ASG) in Fairfax.

Dallas, ASG is the one shop that I think has a consensus of positive experience. Everyone else here has their favorites and their nightmare stories. I can tell you a few more places I'd never go to, but ASG is centrally located for most of NoVA and no one dislikes them. With a '94 turbo, definitely stay away from dealers.

If you want a REAL PPI, let us take a look at it. Seller will beg for mercy when we're done with him.

Ya know, I'm almost in the mood to start another Bash HBL thread. God, they blow.

So when did an 'engine drop' become part of a PPI ?

Don't forget the suspension inspection which requires new TB's/shocks/sways/bushings.

NOw we're talking, thats the PPI I want. I am always concerened that most place just look for the big stuff, when the little stuff can cost alot also. When I sold my 89 Cab and the buyer wanted a PPI, the shop was not sure how to operate some of the options, including holding the button for the power top down till the light went off.

It will never touch the floor before it completes my 3.6 turbo conversion.

It will be apart before that happens.

Autosport Systems Group in Fairfax has done two PPI's for me within the past 18 months. One, on a '87 Turbo saved my ass and I opted not to buy it. The other turned out well, and I purchased it my 996.

I'd recommend them if it's near the car. Plan to spend a coupla hundred dollars.

Muhahaha
Dan, does that mean I got first dibs on your 3.2L?
Dallas, there are alot of shops in the area. Most of which I would not take my 911 too, even if they agreed to do the service for free.
With that being said, your best bet is to have a couple NoVA guys do the PPI for you. I would feel safer in the hands of these guys than any independent or dealer service shop. If you want more local people to chime in, check out www.dorkiphus.com.

Gotta disagree here guys, Porsche of Arlington will be more than capable of looking at this car and rendering an expert opinion. I've been through the process with them multiple times and they are good, and they know more than just the current models. Voice of experience...
