Relay location?

The fresh air blower on my '86 911 isn't working.

The fan runs when power is connected directly to it, and the light on the control panel in the dash comes on when the lever is moved over (hopefully indicating that the switch may be okay).

There must be a relay to check, but I can't locate it. Can anyone tell me where it is?

The light would come off different contacts so it may not tell the full story. No external relay. Where are you applying power to the fan...directly to the motor or through a connector? Are you also providing a ground or using the current one? Did you check the fuse --#6...(25a)? Do your rear window defogger and cigar lighter work?

Power is direct to the fan motor, and fuse #6 is okay as are the lighter and the rear defroster. Sounds like it may be a switch issue?

To clarify my question...when you apply the positive voltage to get the fan to run...do you also apply an external ground?...Also, the spot you apply the voltage..what is the wire color there?

I grounded to the car, not the wires.

It's sleeting like crazy here at the moment, and with no garage, it'll probably be a while before I can get back to the blower.

Hopefully it's a little more comfortable outside in NM than in NC right now! Thanks for the support--when I can get to it, I'll post again.

The reason I ask is that the power wire to your fan is not through the control panel but your ground is. If it is the 12v you are missing...you probably have a broken wire/connection..probably where it connects behind the rear window defogger switch. If it is the ground that is missing..it is probabby a loose connector between the panel and the blower (where the panel cable plugs in). Also there should be a couple of brown wires coming off the back of the panel to a ground lug. This is also a likely cause if it is the ground that is missing.
Yes, not too bad here in NM today...I meat to be in NC this week, but things keep popping up.
