Very light steering is a big plus in the early cars - I can literally turn the steering wheel of my 1971 911T track car with 1 finger at slow speed - even with Hoosiers -

There were some wiring harness things specific to that model year - ie wiper motor, and some switches / relays were different then other model years. Nothing really major though.

You might compare 911s to motorcycles. The 996 is the Honda Gold Wing. At the other end of the scale, the early 911 is a dirt bike. 912 is a 125cc and the 911 T is a 250. The 911 S is a 500.

Mabye a BMW R75: slow to get going but a comfortable ride.
The T's have low compression engines so they last longer and run on anything, but they are mag cased so they're pricey to repair.
Mine had rust and electrical problems as well, but it's got the antiqueness of a sporty 356 combined with the comfort of a slow SC.

The '70 has the great racing pattern 5 speed (unless you are in traffic) - the '72 has the oil tank mounted closer to the CG. Those are the high points for the early cars IMHO (and I own a '73).

Are you asking about the 70-71 or early cars in general or LWB cars....??

Well, that kinda puts me on the spot. I don't want to say anything negative about SCs. I think an SC is a dual sport bike, little heavier and with more widgets. Bullet proof engine. Good trans. Nice flares.

Whether it's a T, E or S, good early cars are getting harder to find. If it's a good one for a good price, I'd get it. SCs are nice but I prefer the more basic cars over newer ones. You can always do good reversible upgrades on the brakes, suspension & put in a more powerful motor. But you will still have a nice early car.

less horsies yeah , but it's got the looks
and is compatible with just about any engine designed up till hte 993 engine.. so you've got options

even so, it's still great fun to drive
and a hell of a lot cheaper than finding an S in good condition

I looked at both and now have two early cars. I say get what you like. The SC are old cars now also. They can all have problems. I looked at an SC that even had rusty rockers.

Just leave yourself some room for repairs and upgrades. The stock seats in my 73 are not comfortable, the sport seats in the 72 are great. I know i'll be changing the seats in the 73 to some kind of sport seat and that cost $$$.

I liked that I can put historic plates on mine and never have to go back to the DMV.

I also like the fact that you just don't see to many early cars around. Makes it stand out alittle.

Go ahead and buy something. Im sure you will enjoy whatever you get. I bought my first one in December about two weeks after I decided I wanted one. These things are cheap for what you get.

Good Luck

And if the T is not fast enough for you, just drop in a bigger motor.

'70-71
T= 130 hp
E= 160 hp, IIRC
S= 180 hp
So, an S has 138% more hp than a T

If the T is clean and rust free, I'd go for it. In fact, I have to admit that I was briefly tempted by the 73S that Chris H. has for sale. Although given my druthers, my first choice would be a 70-71 E or S.

Thumbs up

Ed,

I've had the same 70 911T for nearly 25 years and have been exposed to and fixed most all of the problems that one would have. Mine started out as a daily driver and is now a weekend queen.
The only real con that I would comment on is the "Push" clutch mechanism. It's one of the most "flakey" designs I've ever seen and on a Posche no less. The cable/plastic pivot arrangement is a DUMB design and the adjustment is DUMBER.
As for the rest of the 70 Tub-Engine-Drive Train if they haven't been highly modified or rusted out and it's a California/Arizona car it should give you plenty of enjoyment and wet your pants fun. The average gearhead can fix most anything on them with/out a manual. Finally, the parts network is more than adequate to replace anything that might need it. New or Old. By the way Pelican is one of the best!!!

Let me know if you have any questions about your contemplated purchase.
