More detail is needed. Price, condition, upgrades, etc...

Lets say the are both equal, within $1000 of each.

Yeah, there's nothing about those particular models that would make the decision a no-brainer. They're very similar.

What can you tell us about the particular cars that you're looking at?

Mark Wilson 02-15-2004 08:33 PM

SC is easier to spell.

Well, given this the SC of course (but I am partial to SCs :p )

Maybe the Carrera given it's more HP and two years newer....might be better for resale.

83 SC

maxnine11 02-15-2004 08:38 PM

if the CIS is well sorted, I would vote SC.....(being an SC owner with a not completely sorted CIS ;) )

vash 02-15-2004 08:38 PM

i go with the SC, but lately i have mwilson's car on the brain.

Mike Kast 02-15-2004 08:45 PM

The 84 has more horse power at the wheels, is it heavier? Are they about the same performance wise? If not...
Is the 3.2 more of a maintenance headache? If so...
I abstain!

nostatic 02-15-2004 08:45 PM

condition, condition, condition. What's been replaced recently on each (shocks, brakes, clutch, etc)? Has the SC had a tensioner upgrade?

yea! and rub your hand across the top of the oil tanks. If one is packed with an inch of dirt and the other only a 1/4 inch...
God, if I was buying one today I would be looking forever! I don't know if I could find one to pass all the tests. I know too much! And I don't know anything compared to most of you...

Resale value is better on the '84, plus it's able to take the Autothority (and others) chips, which the SC systems don't take.

I'm partial to the SCs (see my pic) but would enjoy playing with the performance chips . . .

Cheers!

Depends on your intent. If you wish to only lightly modify the car I would go with the '84. If you intend long-term to highly modify the car then I'd go with the SC. It seems there are many more options with the 3.0 motor, but the '84 seems more reliable and has better brakes. Beyond that they are very similar.

Carrera, if nothing else just for resale. But if one were nicer than the other, I'd take the better of the two. Sounds like a win/ win situation. :D

Once you backdate they will look the same ;) ie good!

88 Club Sport 02-16-2004 03:39 PM

If truly equal in condition, I'd go with the 3.2. Get a euro cat bypass, free flow exhaust and talk to Steve W about a chip
(http://www.911chips.com/) You'll get quite a bit more than the SC's 180hp.

That being said, see nostatic's post above....that says it best! Replacing shocks/bushings/tie rods etc. gets expensive even if you can do it yourself!

Which ever one you buy, you'll love it....both are great cars stock and better after you've gotten your hands dirty modifying them :)
