Question Ideas on Preventive Measures

My '85 TL Carrera has 68,000 mi. Apart from regular maintenance issues like tune up, oil and filters etc what do you, the audience suggest as preventive maintenance. I'm thinking DME relay for sure but would you guys suggest, impulse and timing mark sensors?? Fuel pump? Brake hoses and fluid?

I know it may be somewhat overkill but I do not know the full maintenance history on the car and want to pre-empt any problems if possible.

Cheers, Mike

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Get towing insurance and carry a cell phone.

Valve adjust, O2 sensor, tranny fluid, brake fluid/check rotors/pads, belts, check clutch cable, head temp sensor upgrade. Those are a few of the items I can think of offhand.

Check ALL ground connections, disconnect, clean, use die-electric grease on any plug or pin you can find.

Take a fuel relay or if you don't have one (thinking the DME handles that) an extra black relay, also a spare fuse kit, a good flashlight, a fire extinguisher (maybe even Halon, or other than dry chem) reachable from outside the car.
In my trunk there is a roll of duct tape, a set of jumper cables, a quart of bottled water, a breaker bar and soft socket for the wheel lugs. There is also a pry bar, about 2 feet long. A basic tool kit. The pry bar also doubles as the prop to hold the tail engine lid up. On the side of the road, any passing car wake will drop it on your head. Don't ask me how I know this.

This list is from 7 years of commuting across the mojave desert at all hours of the day and night.

YMMV.

tranny oil change, maybe an occasional dose of techron? other than that, the best thing for it is just to drive it. occasional hooliganism will keep it happy too. i think your doing it right so far..

Cool, thanks for all the ideas. To be honest all of those suggestions ARE done already. I guess I'm just fishin for some other project to make ME feel better about using the P car for some extended trips.

If you can think of anything else suggest away!

Thanks, Mike

I've heard "lube the door hinges and latches" more times than I can count. Don't forget to lift it and run a hose inside the fenderwells -- you'll shave 15lbs per corner off your sprung weight that way, and you may even find some rust. Always good to find rust before it finds you.

change the brake hoses

you are near the time when all rubber bushings in the suspension should be renewed -- they harden with age (not with mileage). also the engine and tranny mounts.

also check the ball joints.
