wow, it runs!
i took the car to a pro to have the air/fuel mix adjusted. figured he would have the tools to get it right. i also asked him to give it sorta a ppi, but after the fact. i also went nerdy on him and gave him a list of all my work to date, just in case. first off, he said i did a fantastic job, so i must share the credit with you guys. THANKS! he said my car runs damn sweet! he said no evidence of the dreaded pulled headstuds. and my valvetrain is clean. he also lectured me on the importance of updated chain tensioners, which is my next big project. here is the list of things i gotta do:
the tensioners, cv joints (grease is dry), fix bent drop bar link on sway bar, replace clutch cable, my alternator is on the way out (he suggests the upgrade to the internal VR unit), and my shocks are partially frozen due to the many years of storage. oh yea, he positively located all my oil leaks, which will be fixed when i do the tensioners! THAT IS ALL! after that it is onto the upgrades. he said not to sell it, and that it is a good clean car. he thinks it need a 3 liter though :) he also thinks my cam chains are a bit noisy and suggested new ones. but picturing myself timing my cams is giving me stomach aches. what do you think? thanks wayne and company. here is gratuitious rare pic, me in traffic and not sitting in my driveway. hahaha. my car ran great on the drive home and no leaks from the targa. i had a schiteating grin on my face the entire time, like i got laid. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1076960219.jpg |
Congrats Cliff! I too got my car running this weekend after having my 915 rebuilt. Words can't express the joy of a fresh transmission!

congrats

That's so awesome Cliff! Glad you got the ole girl running sweet!
|
Congratulations; forward through the projects! Cheers, Jim

thanks guys. jim, give me a bit of time and i am going to go and look up your son's car in davis.

That is a long way from the abyss to automotive bliss. Drop a invite and I'll come over to Concord to help you drop that engine.

Congratulations. This has been a hard-won battle for you, breathing life into a neglected Porsche. Incidentally, the car is rather attractive.
Cam timing is a snap. Trust me on this one. It is cake. The mechanical work associated with changing chains and such...that's the hard part. The cam timing is cake. Oh, and when you upgrade to Carrera tensioners, you also need to upgrade to the newer chain wheel carriers. Some say the geometry of the old chain wheel carriers is a big part of why tensioners failed. |
That's the first pic I've seen of your car Cliff, very nice. Hold off on some of your to dos for a while, just enjoy driving it. I miss mine, big time, not quite as bad as I miss sex (7 mo. pregnant wife), but it's up there. Actually, the Porsche was becoming an alternative source of enjoyment, since I'm now dead from the waist down anyway. I seem to be off on a weird tangent, what was this thread about?:D

thanks cliff |
Super: Cam timing is a snap with the right tools and with the valves all backed off. That big cam nut can be tough and is best tackled with an air impact. Press. fed tensioners are preferrable but, IMHO, Mech. tensioners can be o.k. if they are ajusted now and then. Spring, where are you?

Congrats

change the shocks and you'll be shocked at the change in feel. While you're at it, maybe some new tie rod ends.
I disagree with your mechanic's comment about the alternator...have the original one rebuilt and keep the external VR. |
nostatic, i agree. i think i am going to go with "Spuds" alternator rebuilder in campbell, ca. lorenb's comments on keeping the VR away from engine heat, makes sense. i could always upgrade later if all else fails. new shocks are upcoming. my friend is actually changing his rears to bilstein sports, and he is giving me his relatively new ones. FREE! the fronts i cant use his free inserts offer, i have koni. damn! any bad affects from mixing and matching the dampers?
|
I've seen people recomend against it, but what the hell do they know?:D Your Konis are probably old and shot though, do they make Bilsteins to fit Koni housings? What the hell, it's only money, you're not married so you should have plenty.

Congratulations! Nice Targa!
|
glad to hear she's running like a champ. is that shot on mt diablo rd?
|
bob, no i think i was on TREAT BLVD, by the bart station. thanks.
|
Sweet dood, glad it all worked out. BTW, if the CV joints are dry, dont wait to them. They will fail and cost you some plata. Regrease them, it only takes a couple of hours to do them.
