Did a search and read a lot of posts on powder coating engine sheet metal, fans, etc. I think I've decided to leave the fan and fan housing alone, maybe just clean them up a bit. For the engine tin, crossbar support, and upper valve covers, I'm not sure which way to go - powder coat, or just a can of black spray paint. Big cost difference. My local PC guy is very expensive. He couldn't estimate over the phone, but he said as a guideline that two valve covers for a big block Chevy motor run about $100. A timing cover about $80.
Opinions? Thanks.

Sounds too expensive. For that price you could make your own system and then do everything else on the car.
Spray paint will look fine but only for a limited time. PC will look great and last. Jamie

Look for another powder coat guy. I got all my engine sheet metal done for $75. The guy I went to was a hot rod enthusiast and gave me a break because I was a "porsche guy". The first guy I talked to didn't want to mess with it and gave me a major run around. I'm sure it would have cost me a fortune to get him to do the work. Right now I'm getting my fuchs powder coated and the guy there is doing my lugnuts and centercaps for another $20. Keep looking you'll find someone.

I just talked to a powder coat guy yesterday. He said he gets $15 per standard valve cover. more if he has to bead blast them first.

For that kind of money, you could probably ship everything to Al Reed and have it polished AND clear powdercoated. He can probably do colored powdercoating as well. You can be sure if Al does it, it will be done right!

Way too expensive! On the phone yesterday with a local guy and he said that he could do the entire suspension off of my Jag for under $100 and thats front and back!
Find someone who is a car nut and go with them. Do a search and you should find other options. JoeA http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=sacramento+powder+coating&spell=1

Definitely way too much for that job. I, also, was going to recommend sending it out to Al Reed or another reputable coater. I have tried the painted parts method and it doesn;t work that well for the long term. I even went so far as to bake the parts in our oven, which is now strictly my wifes oven!!!
Anyway, the powdercoating is well worth it, and you should be able to do every part you named for under $100. Good luck, Brian
