This was from an earlier thread:

FWIW -

There was a blurb in the Nov. Exellence Technical Notes regarding the latest factory oil
recommondations as of Feb.28 '03...

"For ALL Porsche models from 1973 onward the approved U.S. oils are: Castrol Syntec
(SAE 5W-50), Mobil One (SAE 0W-40, SAE 5W-40), Sunoco Synturo Gold (SAE 5W-40),
Havoline Formula 3 Syn. (SAE 5W-40), and Valvoline High Performance Syn. (SAE
5W-30)."

I have been using Mobil One 15W-50 in my 3.2 with no leaks, smoke, or consumption
issues (seems to use a little over a qt. in 3k mi.). for the last 2 yrs. I find it odd though
that the factory ONLY recommends synthetics, and such light wt. oil for cars built after '73,
when so many people are obviously having problems keeping it in the engine.

I also remember reading that synthetic oil is the oil of choice for many Formula V
engines, and tests have shown that it has no ill effects on engine seals in these and 356
engines.

I have NO technical background in these matters and am just passing along info that I've
read.

Judging by the posts about oil in the past there is a lot of confusion on this issue.

I find it hard to believe as well, but that is what Excellence magazine published as the latest factory recommondations as of Feb. '03.
