Rear wheel thunk!
Recently a thunking noise developed around the driver's side rear wheel. It's a "thunk" sound that is independent of speed or gear. It started out as a couple of thunks at low speed and dissapeared around thirty MPH. Now it happens at any speed. It has no rhythm to it and hits once or twice, goes away, thunks again, you get the picture.
What I've done lately: changed the spring plate bushing to Weltmeister (they're well-greased), pulled engine and transmission for other repairs, replaced brake lines. I have no sway bar (yes, this is my 912) and have yet to have any shock problems. I tried to diagnose it by pushing up and down on the car - no sound. I jacked it up and rotated the wheel a bunch - no sound. I don't see anything rubbing. Any ideas??? ![]()

Is there a baseball loose in your back seat area? If the bushings are good, and the shock is good, and the CV joints are good, etc., then there should be no noise.

The CV joint on my '82 SC's drivers side was bad and I noticed it by a "thunking" noise; particularly when turning to the right. I agree with Eric - check the CV joints.

Roger - CV joint. I'll be doing that this weekend. I'll let you know. Thanks

While you're in there, take a look at the upper end shock bushings. If you have a 912, my guess is that they probably could be replaced. Also check the lower shock mounts.
Good luck, happy hunting David Duffield |

Looks like it was the CV. The outboard joint looked good but when I pulled the other one off the shaft it was well worn. The body and cage were OK but the hub was pitted and galled. I re-packed both and the test drive went well with a 90% reduction in noise. A temporary fix. Thanks for the tips.
