Save money with Heater backdate from JW

Getting ready to do Heater back date. Instead of buying the turbo piece ($180.00) I got the early piece which per this board was told to just hammer in the nec. clearance. I didn't really like the idea of having my engine comp. that I am going to redo having a pounded out sheat metal piece so I took it to JW (sometimes it's nice living in Sea.) to see what he could do.

Well after buying all the pieces used (UncleZak) and having JW cut and weld the duct piece I am into it less than the turbo piece alone. John was thinking of making these available or offering this service for your duct piece so check with him on pricing.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1077381998.jpg

What years is this mod for?

Looks nice!

Mine is a 1983, the backdate is for getting rid of your Aux heating fan in the engine comp. It really cleans it up. Do a search and you will find lots of info. Superman has a really clean one on here, He showed it to me at an Auto-x just after he had done it and I decided then it was only a matter of time until I did it.

Looks good but $180 for the Turbo piece ... is that the price of a new one ???

I just did this project on my car while I had the engine out and I picked up the Turbo piece from a local source for $30. The engine compartment is SOOOOOOOOOOO much cleaner and open now that all that fan stuff is outta there :)

I also got rid of the AC on the right side so I went with a backdated piece there as well.

BTW, after a few test drives it seems like anything over 3k RPM's and I get plenty of heat. Anything under 3k and it doesn't seem to move much warm air.

Let us know how it works out for you.

Ya, thats for a new one from the dealer. The used ones go really fast so that was a good score. I am also putting on SSI's, I am going from GHL's and I hear the SSI's put out more heat so that should be a bonus.

I found the Turbo part at the Germany Autofest for $40. That was very lucky, those turbo parts are getting very scarce and sometimes go for over $200.

JW did some nice work there, you’ll love those mods!

I had these 2 pieces made for $125 or so.

Well, do you want to sell your blower fan that you are not using anymore?

piedogger 02-21-2004 05:57 PM

My htr fan is not very healthy I bought it off ebay and got screwed. It was off of a low milage fl. car never used htr blah blah. When I got it it looked brand new, sat around until winter put it in and it made worse noise than the one I replaced. I opened it up and it had all kinds of non factory shims and JB weld and worn out brushes. I ended uo combining rhe two to get it to work sorta and put into motion my backdateing plans.

It is the early piece for driver side but it will hit the dist. The turbo one has extra clearance for the big dist. but 180.00, John cut and welded in a patch that looks just like the turbo piece at a fraction of the cost. It fit perfect I was able to do the conversion in less than an hour.

I know what you are talking about. I had someone wanting to sell me their, "just like new" blower! I had already seen many post from them asking about the blowers. Now they are trying to sell off their junk!

piedogger 02-21-2004 06:32 PM

Ya, I would not buy a used one again. Driving home tonight my car got hot twice as fast usually, I know it's not supposed to work as well in traffic but so far very impressed I can't wait to get my SSI's on.

If there is no dizzy, then will the older version work, or is the turbo one still required on a 3.0L SC?

piedogger 02-21-2004 07:02 PM

Yes it would work. It still has the cut out just not big enough to clear later dizzy. If you don't have a dizzy you might want to find out where Kiezan got his made, his looks very clean.

kiesan 02-22-2004 09:39 AM

My friend/tuner who I built my car with over a 2.5 year period had these made (modded the stock pieces) here in Seattle by a metal fabricator. I'll ask him more details about who did it but I'm guessing you could show a good fabricator the picture of mine or even just describe what you want and 'voila, instant custom heater. By the way the heater/defroster (SSI's, no footwell fans, no aux engine bay fan, just the fan in the luggage boot) seems to work just fine in this configuration.
