When is a Porsche a "Bastard" Porsche?

In short, if a Porsche is of one model year, but has an engine from another model year, how, exactly, is it a bastard?

The engine is still a Porsche engine, and in a manner of being, original equipment. If the same hypothetical car has upgraded SC or Carrera brakes, though not "oe," they're still Porsche brakes.

Or better yet: is the '74 RSR Carrera a bastard because it had 917 brakes, which originally appeared on another car?

Is the '74-'77 ROW Carrera a bastard because it had the '73's 2.7 MFI engine?

Is the '76-'77 Carrera 3.0 a bastard because it had a 2.7 crank?

I don't think so because all this was done in the factory. So why would a car altered outside the factory with parts from different model years that are nonetheless Porsche parts, be deemed a bastard? We all know Dr. F. created several "specialty" cars with parts from different cars. The SC/RS is one, right? So why would his creations be excluded from the rank of "bastard?" Or would his creations be excluded from being called "bastards?"

IMHO a Porsche with a Chevy V8 represents a true bastard: the car is a hybrid of two different automobile manufacturers. Sort of the automotive version of a jackalope or okapi.

But you guys/gals be the judge. What do you guys think defines a "bastard" Porsche?

Oh, I forgot: the 916, too. Is that also a bastard?

Hmmm....

But is it still an SC if it has a 3.6? Or is it a bastard SC? Something to ponder, eh Ryan?

A SC is excluded from the bastard clause, regardless of the engine (except 2.7 of course).

Got it, or do we need to dispatch the black helicopters again?

BTW- I would count on your helicopter outrunning them w/ those old reused igniters.

New plugs or used, the 47 couldn't outrun a 2.7!

I must say that the term is used quite too often. Some of us call our cars bastards because of things we have done to them that when viewed by the traditional Porsche concourse guy he would say "that bastard!" and stomp off with his nose in the air.

Here we go! A Bastard 911....Hmmmm. It goes like this. If I understand your question which I am pretty sure I may not a Bastard 911 would be a car that has been modified to suit an owners personal tastes that may not reflect the mainstream view of 911ness. Such as...oh I don't know... A Strosek body kit for instance.
Now take an SC pop a 3.6 in it and maybe a 964 rear spoiler or something...is that a Bastard? Depends on the owner I think. If the owner still clings to the ridiculous notion that his car is not a Bastard then the car must obey. Not my rules but rules none the less. IMO you can't argue that the SC is the best car ever because of it's 3.0 aluminium engine and superior CIS representing the pinnicale of 911ness and then throw the engine away in favor of a "better" one and then claim it is still an "SC". That is hypocrecy my freind. (i never won a spelling bee)

You got me nervous now, thown...I have 74 mirrors, SC spring plates and 930 rear t-bars in the 73E. It can't be a bastard...it just can't.

Only one problem:
okapis are real and God made 'em that way.

How about a functional definition? Bastards are made by men who don't stay around to take care of them.

This should be obvious. It's not a bastard if its current state equals the factory build sheet, no matter what the factory did to it. i.e. the factory (the parent) would confirm 'ownership' or 'origination'.

So...if the factory made a v8 911 and issues a build sheet, its not a bastard, rather exotica. If you put a duck tail on pretty much anything other than a small group of vehicles, you've made yourself a bastard.

my rather un-informed 2 cents.
