anyone here part out there car instead of just selling it outright?

im at a point where my 73 t project car has languished for too long. its not at a state where it could be made road worthy or sellable without lots of cash (which i dont have now) and concentrated effort (which is lacking as well due to a growing interest in motorcycles). so im considering parting it out, just wondering what others have done.

was it a terrible experience? was it worth the effort? how do you think you made out.

I bought a couple of little parts from a guy on Ebay a couple of years ago. He happened to be coming to my area to visit family and agreed to deliver them. He was parting out a '72. Out of curiosity, I asked him how much he had made in pating the car out. His answer was around $9K.

the average "parter" sells a few things and ends up with a tub missing the fenders and doors and misc trim, and then you have to scrap the rest to get it out of your yard.

Sure doesn't sound like fun to me. Lot's of time spent dissassembling, advertising, packing, shipping, dealing with flakey buyers. Lot's of little parts that are not worth much and/or demand is low.

All the while your wife is screaming at you to get rid of that pile of junk.

And when it's all done, you've destroyed another early 911.

Just sell the project and be done with it. Hey, I might even be interested myself. Send me a description and price.

Chuck? You're telling me not to part my car? I've often wondered, when seeing what bits & pieces of it could go for...leather sports seat interior, sports seats, ZF limited slip, the oil lines & radiator, even the original tool kit....all the while Bruce Anderson saying that an "excellent" example is worth...what? $16K or so???

Paul I'll buy those seats...if a 72S is worth about 13-16K the sport seats must be around 500 for the pair. I'll send a money order in the morning.

Listen to JW. Although I've made some money, I'm in that exact situation right now. And it won't roll or even move. I have to cut it into pieces or get a crane.

But you will sure learn a lot. I now know just about every piece of an early car. However, you say you want to get away from these things............sell it whole and be done with it.

I really couldn't agree more...just felt the need to dig on ol' Bruce a bit..;) On the other hand, after it's all done, you might end up with a countless amount of misc. fasteners...

With everything that is involved in parting out a car I can't see how the whole process could be done in anything less than a year. You might make more dough doing it that way, but you have to figure in the cost of your time.

the whole shipping thing is what i see as a problem espically the engine and trans, i would think those should be sold before all esle, thanks for the feedback.

oh and pwd i have plenty of misc. fastners from my olds,trans am, blazer and caprice which all seemed to be towed away by the junkyard, funny how i never sell a car.

Ahhh, but those fasteners are mostly SAE. Now you have the opportunity to begin your METRIC collection...:D Actually, after a few trips to a local fastener supplier for some bits & pieces, I'm only half joking here...can't seem to escape the place without spending at least $10 or so...

I'd echo the comments. I started to part my 968, but the greatest demand was for cheap small bits and pieces, and it was clearly going to be a lot of hassle and take a long time.

I would have probably made more money that way, but in the end someone made an offer for the whole car that enabled me to make a bit of money on the deal, so I went ahead.

Before that early chassis goes under the cutting torch, consider basterizing it with a tube frame and a small block-anything but the crusher.
Have some fun at the track and then sell the complete project with the oem parts you've saved in a box.

well, i'm gonna throw a spanner in the works and disagree.

i have met a couple of guys over the years who have started very nice businesses by doin just that (not suggesting you do, but it can be that successful).

a agree that rarer cars should be saved if possible, but ones that are a dime a dozen?

it is not such a bad thing parting it out, it will help put value on remaining models, and also your parts will ensure that other cars remain road worthy - thats a great reason as far as i am concerned.

if you can get rid of the whole then do that, but dont worry about parting it out.
