Daily Driver Insurance

I'm looking into the possibility of making the 911 my daily driver. One of my commuter cars has probably 'met its maker', and I'm thinking I won't replace it with another daily beater.

I currently have a collector policy, which doesn't cover the car for daily use.

What are you daily users doing IRT insurance: who with, coverage, how much?

thanks
Todd

I just talked to State Farm about this today. They have a sort of low mileage policy. Max is 7.5K miles per year and the value of the car is per NADA guide. I looked at NADA and an 85 car was valued reasonably in the market ballpark (for a basically stock unmodded car). Don't know about other years. At least in my case, this policy seems reasonable for a no restricted use policy (other than the mileage max) - at about $600 per year. However, this is for the boonies of Illinois.

I use mine as my daily driver, paying $526/yr with USAA. Liability, UIM, Comprehensive, no collision. Driving around 20 miles/day RT to work...sooo, 400 mi a month...so around 5K/year. USAA like most companies base insurance cost on annual miles.

you better check that state farm policy, this has been discussed many times and I don't believe SF has such a policy, at least not in Atlanta. The only one they mention is one for show cars with NO driving.

mine is a daily driver with geico. About $500 per year, but that is without comp. That will add about another $200-250/yr I think. Check to see what they will value your car for though. I've got to get mine "inspected" before they'll add the comp/collision.

I have been with State Farm for about 30 years and just purchased insurance for my 88 911. During the winter months for comprehensive it is $31/month 250 deductible and $72 a month for full coverage 500 ded. collision, 250 comp. ded. up to 7500 miles a year. This includes discounts for multiple cars and home owner's policies.

No so. I have State Farm as well. I have three cars and my home with them.

Right now, since Smokey is a pleasure car I have agreed to no more than 7,500 miles annually and no more than 30 miles weekly to work. If I want to increase my driving, my agent told me that all I need to do is tell him, they will reduce my restrictions and my rates will go up. For example, if I want to go to 75 miles/week for drivng to work and keep the 7,500 mile cap, it would add about $120/year to my policy. I have full coverage on the car.

Harry,

How would the value be determined if it was a total since it is way beyond NADA or Kelly? I have an early car I would like to drive more, but have not seen much stated value insurance that lets you do more than take it to parades and pleasure drives. Driving to work or even to the shop are not covered - Haggarty.

Thanks,

Rick

I am probably a little too trusting but I had a few conversations with my agent (who has been a good advocate for me int he past) and he has contacted the underwriters. I asked point blank what valuation they are using to determine my collision rate and the value was in excess of what I paid for my car so I figured i was ok. Now that you mention it, I should revive that conversation again just to be sure we are still ok.

I did not want a "garage queen" policy as I do like driving it to work and do track events.

I have used State Farm for 18 years. I have two Porsches and several other cars. I have 50 deductable on the Porsches and have had a claim for a sand blasted windshield. I do have the 7500 miles limit per year per car. I was told it was okay to take either of my cars to shops and if a claim should arise the car would be covered. I trust my agent and his staff, but I'm going to recheck my policy. I also have stated value.

Just make sure you get a written document that states the agreed value of the car. You may have to get an appraisal for this, and you may have to renegotiate each year.

Larry and Harry, interesting comments on State Farm as I have been todl point plank that SF does not have any sort of special policy for porsches or any other type of sport car that provides reduced premiums for driving less. Maybe this is just specific to Atlanta but be sure you read your policy correctly. The collector car policy is mainly for trailering the P car to events, not driving.

I am in the process of changing over to Parish Heacock to save some funds, getting 5000 mile limit, 20,000 stated values, 0 ded, and annual premium of $500. Once the car is 20 years old, the cost will go down further.

State Farm has been fine but they sure have not cut me any slack. Do we have any SF agents out there?

Bob

Bob,

It may be a State/regional thing about the exact coverage. After this thread started, I decided to discuss my coverage with my agent. We discussed the option of a "garage queen" policy but we agreed it was not suitable for my plans for the use of the car.

I pay $50 a month for full coverage (vlue of car agreed to be $12,000) for the months when I'm driving it and $25 a month while it's stored. I have a $500 deductible and a clean record. I use Citizen's Ins. in Michigan and my agent is a Porsche fan, although he doesn't have a Porsche. So far, no claims...

We're in SoCal and have had SF insurance for 20 years. They have limited mileage policies and they apply to all vehicles, not just special interest cars. It states on the policy, " Driven 7500 miles or less annually."
