Converting to Coil Overs...

Just curious, how much would it cost to scrap the factory Torsion Bar suspension and install Coil-overs all round?

Anyone here done this?

I was considering some Sanders hollow T-Bars to compliment my Koni adjustables, but am now toying with the idea of a Coil-Over configuration.

Advice?

I had the same question regarding the cost of coil-over conversion. However, I would not pay the extra money for the hollow torsion bars. The weight savings would be insignificant. Take a look at some of the currently active threads on suspension mods.

FYI, Protomotive have a rear Coil-Over conversion kit for about $600 (which includes shocks).

They don't do front coil-over conversions for street cars as 23mm torsion bars are enough.

Well for starters:

$2400 threaded body struts and the coil-over hardware.
$ 700 for the ERP rear spring plates (You could stay with the stock ones, but you'd be sub-optimal here
$ 500 for welding and additional reinforcement for the rear strut towers)
_____
$3600 is about what I would safely budget. You could do it cheaper, probably shave off about $1200 if you kept your original spring plates and did the welding work yourself (an engine pull do do this) or left the welding out entirely (this subject is up for debate)...

WydRyd,

Chris has it right (as usual). Especially heed the reinforcement advice!

I am unfamiliar with the Promotive kit, but would be suspicious of 2 things: the price (too low), and the assertion that one only needs the rear done. The primary reasons for moving from stock torsion bars to coil overs are adjustability and improved balance. Changing only one end of the car will accomplish neither.

Also, if you ever plan to campaign your 911 in Porsche sanctioned racing, moving to coil overs, without MANY other extensive modifications, will normally place you in a class where your car will be hopelessly uncompetitive.

Check thoroughly before investing.
