Rust Repair Suggestions

Guys,

I bought this 72 E project car last year and luckily for me so far it only has one major surprise. The rear latch panel is cancerous as seen in the pic. I cut some of the rust out already. This rust was covered up by a late model Porsche reflector so I did not see it on my pre purchase inspection. R- Designs sells the panel but can anyone explain what it takes to remove and replace? I cant seem to figure it out without wanting to cut the rear fenders.

PS. Does some sell the metal groove for the rubber engine cooling seal? It is partially rusted on the latch panel as well.

Thanks

Three body pieces come together at the edge of the latch panel: The rear fender with the water channel, the latch panel and the bottom member of the tail light opening. The bottom of the TL incorporates the side of the opening where the lid fits down. The latch panel is pretty much a straight across piece that rolls under and welds to the TL piece.

I would cut there, straight down as far wide in the opening as you can. However, If there is more rust over further and going up towards the fender, you might need the TL piece which goes under the water channel at one end, and inside the fender at the back of the wheel arch at the other end. Looks to me like you can do it w/o replacing the TL piece.

Follow the spot welds down the water channel until you get to the three way part after you've removed the center piece and you'll see where it all comes together. I would sandblast the area so you can see better. I took a nasty looking heavy duty rotary wire brush to mine since the engine is still in there.
