Fire Extinguisher Mount

I copied from another thread and mounted my new extinguisher on the tunnel cover between the front seats. This makes for quick and easy access, and the chrome looks cool (let's hope I never have to use it). I was curious how much protection I have with only a one pound chemical extinguisher.

Richard, I like my solution. I bolted a fairly thick plate of aluminum to the passenger side of the tunnel, alongside the console, in the footwell. The extinguisher is bolted to that. Both occupants can reach it easily. The passenger seat has full movement. It's a 5# Halon. I intend to get a dry chemical unit placed in the trunk. The Halon is basically just for an engine fire, in my car. The dry chemical would be for everything else.

BTW, Ron is a fire fighter.

You don't buy it, you make it.

Details, with another option (mine) here:

Not to change the topic ... but ... I have been thinking about adding an extinguisher. Question: what type does everyone use. I know our host sells the $$$ type. What is the benefit? Won't a normal dry chemical crush oil / gas fires?

I will sort out a mounting point later. I am leaning to directly in front of the passenger seat, on the floor. I can't mount to the tunnel because I stow the targa top back there.

Many threads here and at Rennlist on this topic. Read and make your own determination. You will find where I stand.

Gratuitous picture my my install under the drivers seat:

I mounted mine the same place as Harry. Under the drivers seat. I put down some foam and then set the fire extinguisher on it and then cut some foam to go around it so it can't roll. Then a bungee cord to hold it in place and I'm good to go. I also went with the #5 halon sold here. Thanks Wayne!

I think a "one pound" extinguisher is like a popcorn fart .......sorry, seems too small and may give you a false sense of security. At least without any extinguisher....you realize the risk.

Hmmm, I would think it to be the other way around. You would want the Halon for electrical/cabin fires (just don't suffocate yourself), as it is less effective on exterior (open air) fires. Theory being the Halon starves the fire of oxygen, which is harder to do when there is a plentiful (outside/exterior) source. Not to mention, you would basically destroy the interior of a car with dry chem. Even if you got the fire out fairly quickly, the chem. residue would be nasty. The dry chem. would probably be more effective on an engine fire, yet still messy. The difference is that if you get lucky and extinguish an engine fire quick, you can usually pressure wash the engine bay and get rid of the mess. Having both is probably the way to go, but like you I only have a single 5# Halon (Halotron actually). If I ever had an engine or fuel tank fire, I would take my chances, and try not to lift the deck lid or trunk up very much while unloading the extinguisher!

all your info is correct, no question; but,

I think what Super means is that his Halon will be his first line of attack at every fire.. sounds good to me.

I'm doing a fume detector as part of a carb install.
Carbs, filters, regulator, and plumbing can be so much fun.

Ah, thanks for the clarification Ron. Couldn't agree more. I don't even own a dry chem. Probably not the best idea, but I just tell myself that the Halotron should suffice, and it's better than nothing at all. After seeing the residue left by dry chem, I'll take my chances!

One pound? You got to be joking. I didn't know that even existed!

If you believe that PCA rules for time trial make sense, you should at least have a 2.5 pound dry or 5 pound halon. I have a 5 pound halon and fastened it to the crossbar of my rollbar.

While it will hold a pound extinguisher, I do not like the idea of fastening 2.5 or even 5 pounds to the trans linkage cover. If you hitt something hard and then roll you have enough things to worry about and don't need a fire extinguisher come loose, beating the living dailight out of you.

That said, I believe the best place to put the extinguisher is on the rollbar, the side of the tunnel or in front of the seat using a bracket.

I had ordered the BK bracket which is VERY NICE. But it works only with a stock seat. So, I recommend you spend a bit more, get a larger bottle and the BK mount, if you still have stock seats.

Cheers, George

While we are at it: I have read that the dry chem extinguishers can really mess up the magnesium case. Is this correct?

Thanks, George

as only a guess,
I'd say that 5# of your halotron would knock down the vast majority of routine car fires.
and for trivia, my battery ground lug is marine style that has the wing nut attachment to the cable for a harried quick disconnect.

From what I have heard from the guys who refill extingushers, if you can't put the fire out with one unit, usually the use of multiple units does not improve the odds. I carry a 2.5 lb dry unit. I figure I'll make my best effort and then let my insurance take over.

Vance. When I looked at that picture I swore it was mine. Right down to the atlas and what looks like winged elm pollen on the carpet behind the drivers seat . what is on top of the folded down rear seats?
The extinguisher doesn't look exctly like mine though.
