MSD Ignition Install
Can someone give a non-tech type simple instruction on the installation of the MSD Ignition System in an 80 3.O? Any help greatly appreciated. Charlie

Im not sure which box you have but this is what I did on my 6420 6AL. Please excuse the barbaric diagram. Also, you might want something a little more sanitary concerning the install but its worked great for me so far.
I kept the original 6 pin female connector in the car (just in case I want to put the original Bosch unit back in) and just used male spade type connecters. The power and ground wires coming out of the left side of the MSD box are pretty self-explanatory. But, heres what I did with the others. Also I did not need the tach adapter, and the white wire is unused. Here is a link to the MSD pdf. http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/6series.pdf ![]() ![]() |

Kirk,
Since I just bought a MSD, i find this thread interesting.Your sketch has me confused. I have a '72 911 with a permatune unit. Does your info apply? 1.Does the MSD black wire go to the coil or the tach? 2. What wire do you hook to the points? 3. The - side of my coil goes to ground?????? It runs ok. The wire from the points goes up to my CD box. Your drawing does not a wire going to the points. 4. Are there other wires that have to be bypassed. In short, what happens to all the existing wires? Terry

Search posts for username "RoninLB" and "MSD"...maybe the combo will work...he's been there, done that, in spades, using a marine spec MSD. He posted, with pics, but some time ago. A very impressive installation...

Hey Terry,
I thought you would have a 3 pin connecter in your 72? I couldn’t tell you how to wire it if that’s the case. I was talking about wiring it to use the existing harness-loom that comes in an SC. Sorry for the confusion. I didn’t mean to imply that it would work in any year 911. I was simply responding to the initial question on how to install in an 80 SC. As far as bypassing wires…. The only wire not used for an SC is the white wire coming out of the MSD unit, as that would be the wire that would go to the points (no points in my car). Check out the MSD site…. http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/6series.pdf Lots of good info there…. Kirk |

I just tonight installed the MSD in my 80SC. I followed some advice from tholyoak and simply used spade connectors on the MSD wires and plugged them into the 6-prong plug which connects to the OEM CDI unit. This really makes a swith back to OEM cake. The thin white wire is not used. I ran another black wire from the tach output to the middle pin between the other black and violet wires.

IMO, -remove stock wires and put into storage. - avoid plug connectors. - use silver solder and dielectric connector protection. - use 10ga for main MSD feed + & - - keep MSD box in air flow; not behind elec panel cover. then there's my humble install pics and info. on 2 pages MSD/Crane Mounting Locations

the instructions it came with were pretty good and i used wayne's book to locate the wires i needed to tap into. i put the 6AL into my 74 with a 78 sc engine. very straightforward.
thick black----ground thick red------battery source (pos) thin red-------switched 12v source, tapped into red wire on the 3 fuses on the wiring mount plate thin black and orange---go to pos and neg on coil white was unused. green and violet----goes to green wire from distributor, inner is neg, outer is pos. tach wire (i think its black again)-----went to black wire with purple striping.

Kirk, Ron and others,
Thanks for the info. I now feel a little better about making the change over. Now, on the MFI system, does........ Terry
