the search is over
Hi all,
It took a few months, but I finally found what I've been looking for... a Tangerine/black 1972 911T Targa. My first Porsche. Well, I actually would have preferred a coupe, but this one was in too good of shape to pass on. Everything checked out ok, and I picked it up on tuesday. The 3 hour drive home was wonderful. I'll post the few pics I have below so you guys can check it out. Some questions I have... are the rocker trim pieces (that are all black) correct? I have never seen any like these. Also, the trim around the windows and the turn signals is black. Aren't these supposed to be silver anodized? What about those all black bumperettes? I'm not overly concerned about these items. Eventually I would like to make the car as original as possible, so I would like to know what is not original/correct. Also, feel free to point out anything that I didn't mention that might be unusual or incorrect. I won't be offended ;) . It sure is nice to not be on the outside looking in anymore. Congrats and nice car. My favorite color next to conda green. Keep an eye out for a silver 550 Spyder repro there in Austin - I recently sold mine to a guy who lives there.
|
Nice looking car!! Congrats. I really like that color, is that the origional paint? looks to be in very nice condition. Cool fog lights too.http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/clap.gif

Chris - I'll keep a look out for the 550. do you know in what part of Austin he lives.
911ctS - yeah, i like the fog lights too. The paint is in really good shape. I don't think its original, but if it is a respray, they did a good job. Its very hard to tell. Is there a sure fire way to detect a repaint? |
Generally when the lenses are trimmed black, the grilles are black. This is how I see the '73s, but I don't know if '72 was the first year for that. On my '71, the lenses are silver trimmed and the grilles are chrome. This is correct for '71.
The rockers look just like my friend's '72 Sporto, and his is fairly correct. Funny though, I was looking at the car the other day and pointed out that he had silver trimmed lenses in back and black in front. He'd never nocticed before. I ought to keep my mouth shut. :D |
Donk--
Beautiful car. Our local stalwart Jamie Novak (Pelican jpnovak) is moving to Austin in a few weeks. He has a couple of early 911s and is very knowledgeable on their maintenance and repair. You can probably get in touch with him through the board. |
donk! that car is sweet!
|
Nice car, congratulations!

Donk,
Beautiful :D .Great colour. :D :D The '72 should have be black around the turn signals (like you have), and black horn grilles. I wouldn't sweat it on the horn grilles. Still look great. The rockers are generally aluminium, along with the window trim. You've got the euro style over-riders / bumperettes. Normally chrome, but they blend in well with the rest of the blacked out look you've got. You're going to love that car. More pics??? Cheers, Ash |
Nice looking car, I have always been a fan of orange. You are correct about the rocker panel area not looking correct. It should have an aluminum piece that covers the entire rocker and a skinny black trim piece that runs the legnth of the rocker also. Here is a pic of my '73t and you can see what I mean. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1077830593.jpg

Sweet car. I look forward to seeing your car on the streets here. I can't wait to get a longhood. I am starting my search for one in the next couple months.
|
My '72T has black rimmed lenses on both ends but I think they are replacements and should be silver until '73. It also has silver plastic horm grills. In '73 the grills were black plastic. The windshield trim and all window trim is silver. You should have an aluminum rocker strip with a rubber insert. It appears your bumpers have the wide optional "S" trim so your rockers should also be the wide, longer style.

Nice car John, welcome to the board. I hope to some day buy a pre 73 911 myself. Orange would be one of my top picks. Please contribute to this thread.

Wow John! Very nice! Don't let it sit long between drives. vroom vroom!
BTW, is that a 260 or 280 in the garage? It looks like a 260. What's the story on that car as well? |
Wow. Just WOW. Very nice, donk. And a cool Z in the garage too!
|
yeah, that's a 260 in the garage, theres also a 2000 viper and a 70 'vette... unfortunately that's the po's garage, not mine.

I SAW HIM TWO DAYS AGO! That car is  ! He didn't pay me any attention because I was in my bimmer, but I want to track him down and get a ride. What a sweet machine. I am debating adding a 986 or a 550 (replica, of course) to the stable next and I think that seeing yours (his) on the road the other day may have helped change my mind. Donk, Congrats! I hope to see you around sometime, she looks like a beaut! |
Texas Turbo -- you're 930 isn't white is it. I saw one today at lunch near lakeline mall. I was a ways behind so I couldn't tell if it was actually a 930 or just a turbo look, but it looked sweet from my vantage point.
