I doubt they have records back that far. If you do manage to get a carfax, I'm not sure how accurate it will be.

More important is the car's current condition. Look it over carefully, get a pre-purchase inspection, and then decide.

So what would be the best way to get some history and is there a way to match numbers?

Ask the current owner. They may have reciepts, and may know some history.

I don't have the literature but I think some others here do that has a listing of chassis and engine #'s (I think...)

the vin will tell you something about the car (spec, build date, intended destination for sale etc.) since you provided it someone can post what it "means"

engine # will tell you whether it is the "appropriate" motor for the chassis if not whether it's "matching #'s"

if you can, try contacting the PO (prev. owner) and see if you can go backwards in ownership

I remember going through something similar w/ my T so I know it's not easy

I wish there was a carfax type database for older cars.

Thanks

Post the serial # and engine #. We can definitely tell if it's the right engine year, and may be able to tell if it's possibly the original engine.....there's a list for 911S's that may give us clues as to what engine # should be in what chassis #.

You may want to also cross post over to the early S registry...lot's of longhood information on that board.

regards,
Eric

Carfax is only for post 1981 cars.

The engine # is to the bottom right of the fan assembly support - The # reads vertical.

The VIN# is stamed on the chassis in the trunk area next to the smugglers box and on the Info plate located in the front trunk area.

Good Luck!

You will need to contact teh DMV in the state it is registered in now. Then trace it back thru other states for each sale.

That's what I did with mine. NOte - privacy concerns apply and they won't tell you the name/address/etc. of each PO. IF you ask they may be able to send a letter you write to the PO's - you can ask for them to contact you, explain what you've done to 'their' car, etc. Enclose a nice pic. Many PO's will be happy to know that 'their' car is still running ...
