Strange starting problem...
 

Hi Folks -

My 3.2 ('87) has had problems starting lately. The starter cranks the hell out of the engine, and when it does finally fire-up, everything is strong as can be....

Here's the catch, the only time it exhibits this non-start behavior, is when it is parked in a certain spot in my driveway. If I bump the car forward with starter, or release the e-brake and let it roll backwards, it will crank a bit and then start.

This has happened 3 times in 3 days. The car fires up just fine in the garage, and everywhere else.

The driveway isn't that steep, and it isn't that cold out, car has set for 6 hrs or so each time.

Any thoughts?

I have spark and smell fuel. The DME relay looks new.

This started shortly after a major downpour.

The "Downpour" comments makes me immediately think it is likely an electrical issue. Distributor cab/rotors and wires often show issues after rainy days. If it has been a while since those were replaced, you should replace them all. This is a very easy DIY job. Start with the cap and rotor since they are cheaper.

And run the car at night, go in back and open the hood. Make sure you are in the dark, no lights. If you see sparks on the wires then you know they are bad. But the rain comment makes me think of water on something or connection effected by moisture. Does it matter if the car has been recently driven or sat overnight?
