Kurt, I came very close to doing the same thing myself a few years ago. Lucky for me I noticed the error as I was installing the starter on the trans. prior to installation. I still had to take the trans back off, re-align clutch, etc. I really feel your pain man. I would take James' advice and take a break before atacking the job again.

By the way, I noticed you have a '72 MGB. I just picked up a '73 for restoration! The Porsche is a blast to drive and race, but I NEEDED a roadster to cruise around in!

KV, you were always there for me early on in my p-car career no matter how ridiculous my questions were (some so ridiculous that we had to private message them). I am truly feelin' for ya here! Wish there was something i could do to help even if it was just a set of hands for dropping engine.

when my 4 and 2 year olds are hurt i usually try to replicate the injurious incident to make them feel better...if i were there i would bang my head on quarter panel to help the cause but i may leave out the hole in the arse part.

Wow, already two pages! My wife can't believe how many people have responded. She just doesn't understand how the members of this board are really a close fraternity, even if we are spread around the world. (But she did make me some chocolate chip cookies to make me feel better) My butt and head are still hurting, but that ache is gone from the pit of my stomach and I am already laying out my battle plans for the engine drop. At least all the parts are clean and the bolts have all been coated with anti-sieze so things should go smoothly, assuming I don't do anything dumber than leave out the ring gear!

john walker's workshop 02-29-2004 05:29 PM

hey, i did it, way back when.

I think my best one happend when I put 351 back in my 69 mustang. Had the radiator laying in the dirt. Put it in and filled it up went for a ride. All of a sudden on the way home she gets hot fast! I pull over and check it out. sure enough no water. turns out I never closed the drain cock and when it was laying in the dirt it got temporarilly clogged untill I went for my ride.. At least I don't have that problem with the 911 ;)

MMARSH 02-29-2004 05:39 PM

I did it too. Luckily I realized it before I put the motor back in the car. One good thing, You probably will never do it again.;)

kurt:

it will come out and go in faster now and you may see a couple of other things that you want to address, maybe, at least you know what happened and youll be driving by weeks end..
good luck..

Unfortunatley we have all done things like this in our haste. Good thing is you'll pull the engine, install the starter ring bolt it up and it will all be worth it when it starts up and runs like a sewing machine!

GOOD LUCK!

Twice I have left the rocker arms completely loose on 2 different push rod V8s. They want to start, but just can't. You go over all the wires and the timing before you think to remove the valve covers. Hours wasted. Kurt, I think we've all had days like this. Chin up, buddy.

Jim Smolka 02-29-2004 06:08 PM

Been there done that...

Hopefully that the ring gear thing will be a lesson I will only have to learn once...

Hope everything else in the project goes smoothly.

Danskman 02-29-2004 06:12 PM

Hey Kurt... don't sweat it. The ring gear comes right off the PP using a mallet. You're almost home. Don't forget the Neosporin.

avi8torny 02-29-2004 06:13 PM

maybe this will make you feel better.....doing my first clutch job on my 70 Bug, I installed the throwout bearing backwards....sounded awful when I started her up. Luckily only ruined the bearing. Never told anyone until now.

pwd72s 02-29-2004 06:13 PM

Kurt, you have my admiration for tackling the job in the first place! :)

Mark Wilson 02-29-2004 06:28 PM

10-4 on what Paul said. I've been living vicariously through your rebuild. Almost there man!!

djmcmath 02-29-2004 06:42 PM

I concur with Paul -- the fact that you've even attempted places you way ahead of most of the rest of the world (including lowly newbies like me). I personally am looking forward to your "first drive" post with some vicarious anticipation. :)

Don't worry man. You'll be shocked how much quicker it goes the second time. Everything is fresh in your mind. It could be much worse. Good luck.

Kurt - I had to install a new starter a couple weeks back. Easy job on a 915 and had it buttoned up in little time. Car was on jack stands and wheels off.Turned engine over and heard horrible metallic-banging noise!!!

Removed starter, all looked fine so reinstalled. Turn key and same noise. Wife came out to garage after hearing noise. Turned over starter again and she asked me why my rear wheels were spinning so fast! Turns out I had left trans in 4th gear and aluminum wheel spacers were rattling. DUH!

speeder 02-29-2004 07:04 PM

Forgotten starter ring gear was the first thing that I thought of, but then you said that you could see it, (w/ the flashlight). I guess that the sensor teeth on a Carrera FW look like a ring gear(?)

Like the others said, the ring gear usually comes off the PP easily, and I have done SO MANY jobs twice in a row because of small oversights such as this. Really, dropping a 911 motor isn't all that much work when you are a pro, which you now are. ;)

TSNAPCRACKLEPOP 02-29-2004 07:06 PM

i put all the pistons into a vw 1600 dual port backwards, sounded like a diesel engine, did not take long to fix!! good luck
