DIY Front Brakes Carrera Questions
The new car I purchased needs new front pads ASAP. I am wondering does Waynes book cover how to change pads?
Is this something that someone with no mechinal abilities can handle? The car is a 84 Carrera. Michael

Yes, project 46.
Yes. Very, very simple. Remove wheel, pull pressure pins, remove pad, insert new pad, re-install pins. Drive. John P.S. Spend the money and buy the book. It's the best investment you'll ever make on the car.

What John said except you also need to pull the low pad sensor and wire off the old pad and put it on the new one. Should add about 30 seconds to a 15 minute job.

Well, I'd have a friend come over who has done brakes before, if you are really a true novice. If the brakes don't work, the porsche experience may suffer a quick and ugly end.
![]() Remember that the pistons in the calipers need to be pressed back to accomodate the new and thicker brake pad. This is usually the biggest pain in the butt working on disk brakes. No big deal but one has to have some tool to do this. Also note that the brake fluid reservoir can spill over, so take some fluid out before you press the calipers back. Just my two cents. Don't be shy but be extra careful when working on brakes. George |

Don,t forget to pump the brake pedal back up when you are done to bring the pads back in touch with the rotors. I,ve seen at least one gas station door driven through after a speedy brake reline, when the mechanic forgot this . It really is very simple to replace pads BUT experience is required to recognize problems like binding calipers, damaged dust seals ,damaged and missing hardware, cracked flex lines and worn out rotors. If you are going to do it yourself have a shop look first to give you an estimate of work required most will look at brakes for free.
