Thumbs down Removing weatherstripping adhesive - uugh!

I spent this afternoon cleaning off old adhesive from around the door jambs of the 73E in preparation for putting in new weatherstripping. This is by far the crappiest project I've done to date. I'm using 3M General Purpose Adhesive cleaner, rags, and a lot of elbow grease to do this. Hopefully tomorrow afternoon I'll finish the cleanup and can install the new weatherstripping. Wish me luck!

Try some very lightweight steel wool (000 or 00) in combination with paint thinner or the 3M adhesive remover.

NAPA didn't have the 3M adhesive remover so I bought 3M tar and grease remover - the lable says it will do weather stripping leftovers.

A few pointers:
Wear a carbon respirator mask unless doing this outdoors on a windy day (not advised)
Let the stuff soak into the residue - reapply without removing anything, wait, let time help the residue dissolve. Rub and scrape what will come off easily and repeat.

Thanks for the encouragement and the advice. I'm doing this outdoors so hopefully I won't kill too many braincells. Some would point out I don't have any to spare. "Only" about 2/3 of a door left to do! I can't wait to finish and I'm looking forward to substantially reduced wind noise with the new weatherstripping.

Good luck Jim, I'm going change the weatherstripping on my SC soon as well. Let me know if you need a hand, I don't really have any plans tomorrow aside from driving around and enjoying the 60+ degree weather! You picked a perfect day to work outside! Thanks again for all your help at the Lifts for Charity event today.

Jim - that should be worth about another 5 hp down the front straight at SP, right ?

Good luck on finishing it up ... at least you've got great weather this weekend to be doing it outside.

Finished!

We had beautiful weather in NoVA today (mid 60's), so I went back to work on this crappy project. I added an old toothbrush to my arsenal and, after trimming the head of it down on the grinder, I had something that could fit into the weatherstripping channel to help me coax the old adhesive out. After a few hours I the channels were pretty clean. The 3M adhesive instructions state that you should apply a thin layer of new adhesive on both surfaces to be bonded, let them dry, and then put another layer of adhesive on and mate the weatherstripping to the door jamb. That procedure works just fine. Here's a pic with the new weatherstripping, not that you can really see that much!

Looks great Jim. That new weatherstripping is good for an extra 10hp at least . BTW Those seats look awesome, what are they?

Pari, they're factory sport seats for early cars.

Can't wait to see how that 10hp gain feels at the track!
