weber question
 

my 71 911t has has weber TIPOs that need some tlc. i'm having a hard time coming up with info on them. does anyone know anything about them? any suggestions for rebuilding them?
i pretty much know nothing about them so any help would be great. thanks!

They TIPO just means "Type" in Italian, it's the characters after that which identify your carbs, which are probably Type 40IDA3C?

There are several books out on the Webers which would help you tune/rebuild them up to the point of cracking the throttle shafts, which would best be left to an expert. Larry Turner also has some good info up on his Rennlist website at http://members.rennlist.com/webercarbs/
with links to PMO, which has been selling Webers and parts for years and now produces an improved version of their own.

There are several aftermarket books on Weber carbs also.
Passini and Braden are two that come to mind.

In addition, do a search on the archives. Mucho discussion on setting up and adjusting them.

I've got a set of 40 IDA on my 3.0 litre, newly rebuilt. Rebuilding is imperative because obstructions in the little itty bitty passages can and will starve cylinders of fuel, which will lead to burnt pistons, valves...what have you. I spent a good chunk of cash buying the parts to rebuild my webers, but I bought all new jets and venturis so you might get away for less. I also modified the float bowls so they don't starve of fuel under cornering. That's a common problem with weberes.

Step one to figuring out if the carbs are junk is to see how much slop there is in the throttle shafts. Worn shafts are very expensive to fix, and the PMO's that someone alluded to earlier are so much better than webers that it's worth the extra money to just buy those, especially after you factor in the cost of rebuild parts.
