Int to Ext VR Conversion

Today was a successful day. I changed out all four oil return tubes (my garage was a pool when I walked in one day), and converted my internally regulated alternator to an external.

I don't have pics but it's so stupidly simple I doubt anyone would need them. Let me know if you do and I'll come up with something.

I took the internally regulated unit and clipped the wires off at the where they met the internal VR. I then created a wire harness that extends to reach the side of the engine compartment where the old external VR resided. I bolted the Internal VR to the firewall and mated it up to one end of the wire extension harness and mated the other end of the harness to the clipped wires on the alternator.

Viola no more over charging (I had a bad VR). Swapping out the VR is now a piece of cake again, and the VR isn't subjected to all that heat.

On a bad note I still couldn't tune the zeniths, this is the second time I've spent more than a few hours on them with no success. I should've just left them alone, they were running fine I just wanted to learn how to do it.

I hope this saves someone from buying an older model alternator just to get the external VR back again.

Here are pics if anyone is interested.

The connector plugs between the VR and wire harness are temporary, it's what I had lying around.

Is that a Borg Warner VR?

I plan to do this in spring and put 2 bosch cans on the console so I can rapidly change between them (race car)

The VR is made by several of the major electronic manufacturers.

The one that came with my hitachi alternator is a Transpo #IH211. Most places only carry the IH210 which is the two wire version.
The part the local shop had in stock that cross referenced is made by WAI #358114. It was $30.
