Full Plug and Play Subaru Flat 6 Swap Kit
Hi all.
So, I've been building a subaru flat six powered (twin turbo no less) 911 for a few years now, and it's almost ready to hit the road. I chose that engine specifically because: A. It's a flat 6. B. The numbers of the engine are almost identical to the SC 3.0 engine. C. It's rumored to have been designed by Porsche, as the technology is identical to VarioRam. D. It sounds like a raspy scalded cat when driven in anger. E. When connected to a modern ECU, it puts out approx 300 HP (245 stock) F. It's readily available, and a fraction of the cost of a Porsche engine, and is 65lbs lighter than the SC engine. This is the one I put into my "Blasphemy Build", which is all turbo'ed up and will put out approx 420 HP. (Another nice advantage of a modern engine is that this one can easily be turbocharged or supercharged) ![]() Anyway...for the last 3 years I've been fielding the "hey, are you going to make this into a kit?" questions, and I've spent the last couple of months (as well as a few years of experience) doing just that. My idea is twofold: 1. A complete plug and play kit that can be installed in any 64-89 911 or 912. 2. It be completely "non-destructive" and rely on virtually no chassis modification, other than a few holes that may need to be drilled to mount the radiator brackets and a pass-through hole for the modern ECU. Why would you commit such blasphemy? Well, there are a few use-cases I see for this kit. This is NOT for someone that has a pristine setup with a lovely factory Porsche engine and all is well in the world. But...here are a couple scenarios I can see this working for: 1. Someone with a 911 or 912 shell/roller, and would like to start enjoying their car right away. 2. Someone with a 912 that wants to double or triple their 90HP. 3. Someone who likes to tinker and would like to add a turbo or supercharger to their car. 400-700 hp is not uncommon for these engines. (A proper build is required, obviously) 4. Someone who wants a fun track car but doesn't want to blow up their Porsche engine. Finally...it's not uncommon for the shops in SoCal to quote $20k for an engine rebuild, and many of them are quoting the *end of 2025* to slot your engine in for a build. So, I thought I would give people an alternative. Now, you guys know I'm a purist at heart...my Grey Ghost has a '95 993 engine: But I can't *believe* how "GT3 RS" this Subaru Engine sounds...and that's before being connected to a stock Porsche exhaust (which my kit does). Now, I understand that some of you will be annoyed by this whole concept...and I get it. But lets not just trash the idea...remember that VW's, and 914's have been doing a swap like this for YEARS now. I'm just offering a solution for the previously mentioned folks. See next post for details and photos.

Here are the details of the kit:
Packed in the wooden crate, amongst a few secret surprises, is: Engine: 300 HP Subaru EZ30R Flat 6 This baby comes stock at 245HP / 219 lb ft Torque, but after a bit of ECU tuning, we are barking at 300 n/a horsepower.* Lots of other fun, modern engine stuff too:* * 6 Cylinder, 2999cc boxer engine * 4-valve, quad camshaft aluminium cylinder heads * Open-deck aluminium cylinder block * 10.7: Compression ratio * Dual timing chain system * Coil on plug-ignition system * Plastic intake manifold * Drive-by wire electronic throttle body * 3 exhaust-port cylinder head design * Variable lift and variable timing intake camshaft (ALVS and AVCS)* - Now this is the big controversy:* "Did PORSCHE actually design this part of the engine?* I mean...it's almost exactly like Porsche VarioRam.* The answer is...maybe.* We might have to find out on someone's deathbed." * Engine is 65 lbs lighter than Porsche 911 SC Motor ![]() (Engine pictured with all factory accessories...the engine will be stripped down to the basics for the kit) Also in the box: ECU A standalone Plug & Play ECU, already terminated to the stock Subaru engine wiring harness.* No need to fuss with wiring.* Just plug it in , wire the power and ground to your car, plug in the drive-by-wire pedal, and go.* Custom Engine Cradle Bespoke for 911 & 912. (must specify when ordering) We laser cut, weld, and coat this baby from scratch.* You mount it to the bottom of your engine, bolt it to the transmission, and you're off to the races.* Custom Designed CSF Bolt In Radiators Exclusively for Rennch - You can't buy these anywhere else.* These are custom designed radiators that fit exactly where the factory Porsche oil coolers (except it's one on each side) mount.* (oil coolers pictured in this photo, which are being used as prototypes) Drive By Wire Throttle (and the options it comes with - Optional cruise control, auto blip, etc….) Custom Driver Side Aluminum Foot Plate This is another custom rennch bit that allows us to mount the DBW pedal.* AN Hoses and Fittings All hoses and fittings are cut to length and preterminated. You just screw 'em in and go.* Coolant Tank, Custom Coolant Crossover Pipe Once again, these are completely bespoke for this project, and will already be mounted on the engine on arrival. Custom Subaru to Porsche Transmission Adapter: This ensures your 901/915 (G50 in the works) transmission bolts directly up to your transmission.* Will be already installed on arrival to your house or shop.* Custom Headers Dont' ditch that Porsche Sport Exhaust! Our Custom Made Headers bolt directly to stock Porsche exhaust, so you can count on raspy awesomeness. Mounting Stuff Custom mounting brackets for all. Surprises! In the box along with the “goodies” are a few unique surprises…but we'll leave them surprises. You’ll also get an “install bible” as well as (of course) installation videos for all the pertinent steps. Pricing Current pricing is $14,995 for the full kit, plus shipping in the Continental US If you're interested, or have questions (lead time is currently 8-12 weeks due to custom parts needing to be manufactured) please drop me a DM or @_rennch_ on IG.

As the first customer to this swap I feel compelled to chime in express my support. Michael has put together a very well thought kit that simply impressed me and motivated me to try something outside my comfort zone.
Admittedly, at first, this was not on my radar at all and just the thought was indeed blasphemy to be honest. However, after checking out Michael's build and causal chat over lunch about the direction I wanted this build to go, it just started making more and more sense. A reliable and affordable route to 300hp, as well as some outside the box thinking, was appealing to me. Of course, the fact the kit wasn’t going to alter the car in a way that couldn’t be undone in the future if I, or someone else, wanted to return to air cooled also sounded good. Can’t wait to get this thing fired up!! Well done Michael! |

It’s done all the time by the 914 guys. Good running engines for a couple grand. Parts that aren’t 50 years old. Easy to get big power for not much money.
I’m wondering if you are able to use a Suby trans. They work great in a 914. Possible?

https://subarugears.com/product/reversed-ring-pinion-5-speed-2wd/ I don't know much about the dimensions of the subaru trans vs. the porsche trans though. And the scope is out of the "bolt in" idea of my kit, obviously. Maybe down the road...

Mmmm
Hey Michael - I've been following your Youtube channel and this is build is amazing. I have a 76 backdate with 3.6L and G50. Need more power and am choking at the cost of a turbo upgrade ($25K minimum, possible massive rabbit hole), plus concerned about blowing my very expensive engine to bits. This would be a great solution for me. How long do you think before you'll have a kit to fit G50 trans? Thanks fella!

912E Kit
Hi Michael,
Love the work and videos. I’m interested in the kit for my 912E. I just rescued the car from 15 years of Cali storage. Super clean and ready for a swap. I’m really looking forward to getting details and more on availability and ordering. Cheers, Steve

I absolutely love this idea! I was toying with it myself a few years ago when I only had 86 911 Roller. Eventually find myself a beautiful RoW 3.2 Carrera but would absolutely love to go down this route if I ever pick up another roller or a 912e. Hopefully, this kit will still be around. Keep it up!
btw, do you have a build thread for the subaru powered build?
