Need Heater Hose Solution
 
Can someone help me with a source for more flexible, heat resistant hose for this connection? I don't know if the PO had the pass-through moved, but there is no way the OEM replacement will stay in place, and the one that was there is lost.

Here is the attempt with the OEM hose. It looks cool, but is under tension and will not stay. I hate these metal/paper hoses!

There should be a 90-degree bend made from sheet metal right above your heat exchanger. Let me see if I can get a photo of mine.

Not sure of the OD, but the brake cooling hoses available are very durable and heat resistant. Try OG Racing, I think they have 2 1/2" & 3".

Tha 90-degree bend looks familiar, now that I see it. Maybe I will look around for it some more! My garage is a mess after 2 months of projects.

the old style exchangers aimed the hose thru a hole in that little square filler piece of tin, at the end of the chain housing. you would also need the early air outlet off the fan housing, but that would require backdating the heater system. that 90° piece in the pic would be the ticket otherwise. standard SC stuff, but it needs to be trimmed at the end to allow the short section of hose to fit.

I can't find that piece anywhere, which is strange even given the mess I made. I still had all the parts in one place. I have been considering back dating anyway, since my blower motor finally died a few months ago. I think I have SSIs, and the hole going through that piece of tin realy looks home-made.

Would the same flexible hose used between the exchangers and the flapper boxes work here? The ones I got from Pelican are very flexible and could probably make this connection directly.

Check out the other post recently about heater hose's. The paper/aluminum foil hoses are not very good in unprotected areas under the engine and will quickly fail. A SCAT or silicone impregnated hose is very flexible to not only allow flexing but also avoid damage from stone chips. The black one pictured has been in place for 3 years with no damage.

That looks like what I got for the flapper boxes. I think I will use that instead, since it is so flexible and durable.

It took me twice as long to connect all those paper hoses as it did to reinstall the actual engine!

Use high quality SCAT or SCEET from Aircraftspruce and specialty Supply... the web page is written similary but I don't have it in fornt of me. Hi-temp silicone with copper coated wire...in either single or double thicknesses and various diameters...great stuff.

Thanks, Will. I need to get some hoses for the connection to the blower inside the engine compartment, too. I am sick of those crappy paper hoses that don't fit, don't bend, and tear too easily.

Backdate
 
Olivier,

Go for the backdate. I just did it on mine. Looks much better and the easier access to the engine is the real pay-off. Total cost $60 for the old style ducts, you can't beat it.

Thanks to you guys, I bought scat hose from a local aircraft supply shop so I could rehookup my heater for which the crappy aluminum ones I had would keep falling apart. I was told it was supposed to withstand 600 degrees F. I had to squash the hose in the tight space between my cam covers and muffler for my right side SSI, so the entire side of one hose is flat against the muffler, right by the intake. So my question is, can the stuff withstand the highest surface temps of a muffler without melting or something?

Steve, first off, the Bodymotion SSI heater duct leaves much to be desired in the placement of the hoses. If your set up is like my old one was with this duct, the hose comes in direct contact with the muffler. I would venture to guess that it is over the temp range for SCAT. I used a reducer on the end of the bodymotion pipe and the SSI to gain some clearance. You live in a warm climate, go with a backdate and just get rid of all that mess!

Michael, it does look like a mess - plus the Bodymotion pipe isn't exactly aligned well and hangs low. This is my last attempt, and I think I will do a full backdate if this doesn't work.

Do you have a parts list and source for the $60 backdate?

I have been considering it strongly, since my blower motor finally died for good after many repairs, and I do not need massive heat. I thought the parts were more like $150-$200, though.

Easy engine access is key for me, since I seem to adjust something during every drive!
