This is Great!

Ok, Wayne...where was this LAST winter when I went through my brake system? That was one of the first things I did when I bought my car and this would have helped alot.

Keep going on these type of wizards. They really help new DIY'ers.

Thanks again.

Nice job. Now, how about a suspension wizard? There are a lot of threads on this subject.

Wayne, You don't have any rebuild kits for 930 calipers. Otherwise, nice job, very easy to navigate!

Cheers, James

Warning: this is meant to be constructive; I'm not trying to be a ***** or anything:

Maybe I read too much into it, but when I think "wizard" in terms of computer stuff, I think of an app that will hold your hand and guide you step by step thru a process. The car cover wizard is a good example.

This isn't a 'wizard'. This is a "select part, desc, price from parts.table where parts.group = "brakes" There's nothing here to guide the user.

To *me*, a brake wizard would at the least capture YMM of the car, and then maybe wheel size (important consideration for upgrades!) and their driving habits (ie street, track, trailer concours queen). This would narrow down the further selections to prevent them from buying the wrong stuff.

Another idea would be to capture how long has it been since their last brake work; from there you could recommend new lines, fluid, pads, caliper rebuilds, etc. Maybe even capture braking symptons, like pulling, fade, etc.

Perhaps also some explanation of the different options; for example, you list the different Pagid race pads, but there's nothing that explains why one would choose one color over the other. In this context, the choice is on par with the selection of brake caliper paint. "Oooh, I like yellow; I'll get yellow pads and yellow caliper paint to match!" (If you've ever known any ricers, you know yellow is faster)

That would be a brake upgrade/repair wizard.

Also: it doesn't look you have pagids for 78-89 930's

(edited fer speling)

It would be nice if you carried performance friction pads too as an alternative to Pagid$$$. They are just as good a pad and alot less money without the break in issues, IMHO. As Thom noted too, there seems to be a lack of 930 stuff( see my previous post). Many folks on this board have these brakes too.

Cheers, James

Hey wayne,

According to the speed bleeder website you carry the correct speed bleeder valve for the rear of my SC (PEL-SB7100) but it's not listed in the wizard. Last time I checked, it wasn't in the regular parts section either.

In the drop downs, make the default selection "No caliper selected" or something like that rather than "select a caliper".

It seems that many of the item descriptions default to the "middle" year ranges from your old catalog. You should update product descriptions so that they relate to the actual component rather than an arbitrary year range.

I personally have never liked a "wizard" type of search. It's fine for those that don't know specifics and need to be walked through. For those that have a specific item or need that isn't along the "wizards" path, it can be a waste of time. Constructive criticism only.

All good comments, that I will feed back to Eugene for review. Again, this is a relatively new process for us, and is designed as a more user friendly way to order parts (combining some of our tech content with our catalog). It's meant to suplement the catalog - obviously if you know exactly what you want, then you can still use the normal, regular, everyday catalog.

Thom, your comments are very good, and I have considered all of this previously. However, I had to design the wizard and the underlying code so that my employees (Porsche/BMW guys, not programmers) could easily create the content and publish it. This is the first generation of the Wizards - perhaps in the future I will look at making them more "code heavy." For now, I think that this is a pretty good start.

The goal is to walk the users through an overhaul or upgrade, so that they can figure out what they need/want to replace or upgrade, all in one spot.

Wayne,
I just went throught it, looks to be complete, but I have never done my brakes before so what do I know? Your new tool will give me more confidence that I can do the work myself, order the hardware from you and save $. Excellent work, thanks!!

Wayne.
Very nice and easy.
But this might be off the brake rebuild but how about wheel bearing replacement at the same time. Just cause you are in there and the cost is not too much more, at least for my car.
cheers.

  • Replace wheel bearings
  • Replace strrut inserts

Ditto. If you make a suspension wizard, I will buy parts ASAP. I will buy parts from Pelican regardless, but it would be good to know that I am not missing a key piece that could kill progress on a weekend.
