converting 911 bumper(s) to 964 C2 look
Hello Dudes,
I have a question.. could someone explain to me. How i can convert my 911 Carrera 1987 bumpers: rear and front to a 964? Yes.. i have the 964 fiberglass front & rearbumpers. But how can i fit it to the bumpershocks? Is ther somebody who has a complete drawing and explanation for me? |
no drawings, but some pointers: you can fabricate a front impact bar that mounts to the end of the bumper shocks and also act as a support for the front bar. We recommend some rubber lining on top of the bar so the fiberglass does not crack. On the rear, strip the original 74-89 bumper of everything, adjust the bar down a little and slip the 964 cover over it-we've done it several times. On either end you can then make up some small brackets of tubing or flat stock to support the lower corners and sides
hope this helps |
Tre,
So you keep the original ally bumpers under the 964 one at the rear? I never realised that. |
911>964 conversion
Ok, so i must strip the rearbumper and lower it some?
How... do i drill new wholes in the rearbumper? or can i cut the plate with the 2 bolts, and reweld them .... lower? And ok.... the frontbumer? I will make a new bumper and can't use the old one anymore? And glue some rubber upon the made innerbumper, to avoid cracking of the fiberglass. Thnx 4 the advice.. greetz Andrew |
yes andrew- you adjust the height on the rear by slotting the holes but it is easier to cut the old bolts off the bumper shocks and make new holes! the aluminum is too strong for most drills. on the front, you can't use the original bar- you have to make a bar that fits behind the fiberglass
Chris- we saw this on a car at a bodyshop once and after that we installed all the rear bumpers this way (unless it was a race car) |

Chad,
That's what I was thinking. In fact, that's one of the reason I'd probably not go for RUF bumpers. |
by the time you made some reinforcments for the ruf (or for that matter our bumpers as well) you end up saving some weight over the stock set up, but not as much as you think. Deleting the big black rubber pads are probably the most weight you can save

I'll take a picture of my rear bumper support (it's off the car) and post it , if I don't email me. My solution is safe, light and simple, it bolts straight to the place where the impact bumper shocks used to be.

Ok..guys.. but i don't wanna use the Ruf bumpers..
I just wanna convert my '87 911 to a 964 C2 look, incl. sideskirts, Cup mirrors, front & rear bumpers. Now y'all confusing me.. If you got some pictures for me, please send them to me.... Thnx |
It sounds like using expanding polyurethane foam from a can would create a solid support between the new bumper cover and the new support bracket or old rear bumper. I would cover both surfaces with something like plastic wrap, mount the covers in place, and spray/press the expanding foam in between the gap. Should also provide some impact absorbtion in a collision.

Expanding foam? woul'n't that problems when you needs to remove the bumper in the future? Yo.. Steve i toke the change of peeking at your 911 pics. Wow thats a nice one... and seems to crack your eardrums to..hahahah Thnx |
Thanks ...
That's why you cover both surfaces with plastic wrap, so they don't stick to each other. |
Bones' C2 Conversion (LONG)
For those of you who haven't seen my conversion see the gallery in my sig'. I'll start with the easy bits.
The 993 teardrop mirrors are genuine used Porsche, I have the driver's side powered, you will need to wire in a relay to get it/them to work properly in both planes, they will only travel in one direction on an SC unless you fit the relay/s. http://members.rennlist.com/msucro1/relaykit.htm The side skirts and sharks fins were new Porsche parts (which I bought at a sale price) buy new gaskets and trim for all the kit. The side skirts attach in a straightforward manner front and rear via self tapping screws and are then bonded to the car. The sharks fins push into the side skirts and are pop-riveted to the body, (it looks neat if you do it right) I used genuine 964 used bumpers and an after market fibreglass splitter (essential if you choose the 3.8 wing) I had brackets made to fasten the bumpers safely and securely (it could be possible to mount the bumpers with the wing bolts only but I reckon they would rip off with wind pressure and it gives extra protection for minor prangs) these bolt straight to where the impact bumper shocks used to fit. This bracket is all you need as the 964 bumpers bolt in an exact fit to the excisting SC wings (very neat). The centre section of the rear bumper has an aluminium support to maintain it's shape despite the exhaust heat, they cost about £25.00. One problem with the rear bumper is deciding which side you want the exhaust to exit , mine is a 2 in 2 out Triad with early heat exchangers. I bought a seperate aftermarket fibreglass left rear bumper as it has the correct cutout (worst fibreglass part I have ever bought but it cleaned up OK. The left/right light pods at the rear are a straight fit but you may need to play around a little to get the correct orientation. The centre light requires that you remove some metal from the body to get it to sit correctly then you angle it to the match the side lights and fix it how you wish to the bumper. The rear bumper is then riveted to the bar (behind the licence plate) The front is straightforward, it just bolts on lights and all. I'm working on fitting a tow bar this weekend so I'll post a pic of the front bumper and the dimensions. If you want this look 17" rims really add to the 'correctness', all the CUP rims look good IMO. I think that's it , if anyone wants more info email or PM me, sorry for the crap pics.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1078493550.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1078493565.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1078493579.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1078493593.jpg |

I got a better angle on how to make myself a rearbumper 4 my planned C2 conversion. And will be waiting for you're info regarding the frontbumper... y'll helping me great deal dudes... |
Pleasure , Rennlist Galleries are down in case anyone looked.

What about the tail lights? can you use the stock or do you need to install C-2 lights?
Do they fit with out any mods? Thanks Bryan |
I don't see why you can't use stock lights new lights require a little fiddling to get the correct fit a bracket has to be realigned at the front fixing point and a hole made to accomodate the place where the 964 light fits into the new centre light unit.

Front bumper
Here's part 2 done my way. You can getaway without a front support as the bumper is fixed at 10 different points. However if you want a substantial tow hook mounting point (you can no longer use the original with the 964 bumper and splitter) and some extra protection for the tub try this.
Sorry about the state of my technical drawing but the pic should help you to figure it out.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1078774936.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1078774957.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1078774972.jpg |
