Targa folding top: webbing replacement questions.

When replacing the webbing in the Targa top, you can be sure that it has stretched to some degree, and that the plates it holds together *might* be off from factory.

If this is true, how does one determine the factory (or your particular car) distance? Do you simply mount the top back into the car and work with the way the top sits on the car?

Many thanks,
John

John I think this is a non-issue. I rebuilt the top on my '72E and as I recall there is lots of wiggle room as to where you set the plates. Just make sure the plates don't overlap.

If the webbing is still in good condition don't replace it. If you plan on replacing the webbing, build a jig to hold the top so that you can locate the webbing and plates positions.

What I did with mine was remove the rivets from only one edge, either front or back, at a time. Before doing this, I ran duct tape parallel to the original webbing as a safeguard. This prevented the plates from shifting while I riveted on new seat belt webbing. No fit issues when done. I don't think the factory webbing stretches, or its a non issue. It does, however, rot when exposed to moisture from a leaking skin
