Lightbulb Soldred in chips in 1984 911

All,

I have read that some 1984 Carrera 3.2 might have soldered in chips. I just bought a new chip from Steve but my car will be in the country side having its winter sleep for a month still, so I cannot check it. However, I would like to be prepared if the chip happens to be soldered in.

Hence, does anyone have experience below what serial number E-series(1984) 911s have a soldered in chip?

I read from one previous thread that at least the first 199 Carrera 3.2 had soldered in chips because Porsche did not yet at that time offer changeable chip option.

Thanks,
TcJ

The car I am buying is an 84, and the owner reports that he can replace the chips very easy.

Hmm, there may be no way to tell 100%. You may want to arm yourself with the inexpensive 24 pin socket used.

If necessary just remove (unsolder) the old chip, replace (solder) with new socket and plug your SteveW chip into the socket. Be sure to take anti-static precautions either way.

TcJ,
I did the Steve W chip recently in my '84 and it had a removable chip w/socket installed. For safety sake I took a phot of the board and e-mailed Steve to make sure everything was ok. He mentioned that there are several variables on the DME's as well that could need a jumper installed as well.

Pull out the DME and look at it. You'll know right away. My 84 has a soldered chip. I desoldered it and soldered a new one in.
Did this around 2 1/2 years ago. I should have put a socket in at the time, but didn't. I supposed I ought to get around to replacing the new chip with a socket and then I can swap.

Tommy, I haven't seen enough 84 Euros to get statistical data, but on the U.S. cars, in 84, the DMEs with the soldered in chips had Porsche part number 911.618.111.01 on top of the box, whereas the the ones with the socketed chips had 911.618.111.05.
