Yet another Fuchs question
 

Here's a new one to me. Sorry if it's been discussed before, I don't recall ever seeing it.

I did some horsetrading with a local parts guy a while back for some "16x9 Fuchs" he had. When I arrived to pick them up it turns out they are welded up from some 16x6 wheels and something else. The centers are painted guards red to boot and they are more like 16x10. No matter. They look great and have the right offset for my car, all the new width to the outside. I look at them and the are nicely polished and the welding looks first rate.

I take them to a local wheel builder to get them refinished. It's been a little while so I call the fellow up today for a progress report. He asks me who welded them up. I say I don't know, that's the way I got them. Why?

He tells me that they we're welded up from two rears not a front and a rear. I have no idea what he's talking about so I say well they are going on the back of the car. No, not what he meant.

He tells me that the lip on the fronts of my wheels are rears. In other words, they are the same as the lips on the back of my wheels and that it might be difficult (or impossible) to get tires mounted.

Then he goes on to say that he doesn't want to alarm me. Well, I'm pretty alarmed at this point. He tells me that he can see that there have been tires mounted on them before.

Should I be alarmed? I never thought the front and back lips on wheels were any different. Should I bail on these, get them machined, or not worry about it.

Jerry, I'm no fuchs expert, but measuring my 16x9s it looks like the rear lips are about a 1/16" taller than the front. Can't see that it would be that big a deal.

Are we talking about modular wheels made with Fuchs centers? Do they have a row of bolts around the circumference?

No. We're talking welded wheels made with the back half of a 16x6 and a half barrel from who knows what on the front. Look very nice though.

I think he's referring to the distance from the rim edge to the "drop center". The outside and inside edges are a different width. If they're both wide, it's hard to mount tires.

That's what I was thinking too Mike, at least on my rims the rear edge is only about a 1/16 wider and a bit flatter profile. Hard to know what Jerry has there though and perhaps other fuch rear edges are different.
