When to rebuild?
 

My '88 Coupe has about 150k on the clock, and she shows no signs of slowing down. My question for you guys is, when should I begin to think about a rebuild? It's my daily driver, and I don't race it. I enjoy "spirited" romps through the hills now and then, and I will probably get into autocrossing soon.

I'm looking for signs that would indicate it's time to rebuild, but I don't see any reason to do it before it's necessary. There is very little oil on my garage floor, and I never see any sign of valve seal wear in the morning. Power feels good, but it's my first P-car, so I have no reference.

I am definitely interested in dropping the motor, just to learn more about the car, and to clean the engine bay. Is there an "abbreviated" overhaul that doesn't get too deep into the motor? Would replacing some top end parts be wise without adressing the bottom end at the same time?

sounds like you've got a pretty tight motor there. I wouldn't see why you would want to take it apart other than your desire to learn more about the car. But if you were to go in there then an abbreviated overhaul would be a top end and replacing your valve guides no? But if you are going to dive in wouldn't it be wise to get to those pesky rod bolts?

If it was me I'd keep driving it. She sounds like she's in good shape.

How much oil is your Carrera using?

Steve, I agree. I'm only asking now because it seems like I have plenty of time to prepare. I want to set up my garage, get the tools that I'll need, all the fun stuff that makes the job so much easier when I do it.

She uses very little oil (I haven't actually measured, but my mechanic is paying attention to it, and hasn't found it excessive), and it is very clean after 3-4k when it's changed. I suppose I'm one of the lucky ones.

As for the rod bolts, I suppose so, but that's the slippery slope I'd like to avoid, if possible.
