912-6 gets a new pan
Last week I was under the 912-6 installing the new fuel line and figured I would fix a small hole in the pan while I was down there. Did some poking around, and one thing leads to another...
![]() Pretty ugly. I got new pans from Restoration design, and already have the old one out. ![]() I've got a few custom patches to make also, figure I'll bend some 5/8" flanges on some stock for a start at the office. Here's my question. The panels I cut out have a reinforcing stamping over the suspension mounting points... ![]() ... but the restoration design parts do not have it.... ![]() Do I need to remove the old ones and install them on on the new pans? BTW, after all crappy patch panels I've seen over the years working on vw's, these from Restoration Design are incredible, clean laser cut edges, sharp bends, great spot welds. Man I wish they would make vw patchs. TIA

John, call Bill at RD, he has the reinforcements you are looking for, and they fit too.

If these guys would make metal flares for STs, etc., they'd probably get good business from Pelicanites.

They do make flares. Just not the ST version. The problem is that the tooling is quite expensive to produce quality parts. He has suggestions for many new parts already.
Bill does a great job and provides high quality parts. I have several on both of my cars.

Yup, agree, Bill at Restoration Design is great, I bought panels from them for a 69 and a 74 and they look like original panels, every little detail is copied from original and they fit great.

The reinforcements are on the way. Pan fitted up well tonight, just have a few notches to cut for the washer pump and the valance bolts. I'll have it this weekend probably.

This is really being a pain, the alignment of the pan is off by like 10mm's. I'm thinking the front end got wacked at some point, gonna try and measure from the rear suspension points to the front beam in the morning, make sure it is straight. Grrrrr.....

Update. My alignment issue was solved, the bolt inserts on the new pan are off just a hair, won't cause any alignment issues.
Got the pan tacked in place today, just some welding and small patches to go, then the tank support. ![]() ![]() Sure looks better with new metal
